News
We have new dogs coming in and sometimes know of dogs in shelters that we do not have foster space for. Please contact us if you are interested in finding a GSP.
Who We Are
SE GSP rescue is affliated with the national breed club, the GSPCA and its rescue program. We place GSPs in need locally throughout the Carolinas, GA, AL, FL and TN and have volunteers throughout the SE United States.
German shorthaired pointers are large active dogs who need a lot of training and attention from
their owners. We require that they be kept as indoor pets, and that you have secure fencing, as many of
them are in rescue because they are escape artists.
Though usually good with everyone, we do not generally place dogs in households with very young children
(under 7 years) due to the fact that we do not know these dogs' histories, as most are turned in to shelters or
found as strays. Exceptions can be made in the case of dogs who are known to be OK with little kids.
Many GSPs are also very prey driven and therefore are not always suitable companions for cats, birds, very
tiny dogs, or pocket pets, though, again, there are many exceptions. All rescues are neutered or spayed, up to
date on vaccinations and free of heartworm disease prior to being placed. Many have been fostered in a home and
are also house and crate trained. Many have been taught basic obedience commands, but will NOT be reliable
off leash for some time and with much training. For this reason, we require a fenced yard of adequate size
for their high exercise requirements.
Some of these dogs can and will hunt, but many have already been ruined for hunting by former owners
or are just not dogs that have the instinct and drive. While we do place dogs with people who want to hunt, we
never place them for the sole purpose that they be hunting dogs, and we cannot ever determine how successful hunt
training will be on any particular dog.
Adopting a friend
If you have not already done so and are looking for information and the procedures on adopting
a German shorthaired pointer, you should go to http://www.gsprescue.org and fill out an online adoption
application.
You must fill out an application in order to be eligible to adopt. You must also reside in NC, SC, GA, AL, FL or TN in order to adopt one of these dogs.
