Tid Bit

You're never too old to...make friends with an animal. Pets have a positive effect on people, especially older adults. Caring for a companion animal brings joy and a sense of connection to one's life, and it also offers health benefits. Studies have shown that pet owners, particularly the elderly, have lower blood pressure, are less likely to be depressed and have higher self-esteem than people who don't have pets.

News

We have moved into the new shelter. Thanks to a generous donation from the late Betsy Bailey Nelson, we have a wonderful new shelter for the animals in Beaufort County. The old shelter for Beaufort County was original built in the 1950's.

Come in and look around The New Shelter.

Who We Are

Beaufort County Animal Control is a county run agency responsible for enforcing State and Local animal control laws and ordinances. Part of the job of Beaufort County Animal Control is to educate the public about rabies, pet overpopulation and responsible pet ownership. It is required that all animals adopted from the shelter are spayed and neutered to help stop unwanted animals being born that would other wise add to the pet overpopulation problem.

Our Open to the Public Hours:

Monday - Friday l:00 pm - 5:30 pm and Saturday 11:00 am -3:00 pm

We are closed on holidays.

If you are coming to adopt or reclaim an animal please arrive by 5:00 pm Monday - Friday and 2:30 pm on Saturday, to allow time to do the necessary paperwork and routine vaccinations.

Adopting a friend

Adoption Fees:

dogs/puppies $55.00

cats/kittens $35.00

The dog adoption fee includes, a $5 adoption fee, a $50 spay/neuter deposit, and it's first shot (not rabies). The cat adoption fee includes a $5 adoption fee, a $30 spay/neuter deposit, and it's first shot (not rabies). The spay/neuter deposit does not cover the total cost of the spay/neuter surgery, it is the responsibility of the person adopting the animal to pay the balance. If the person adopting an animal cannot afford the entire cost for the spay/neuter surgery, they may contact the Humane Society of Beaufort County for assistance, prior to making the appointment for surgery. It the newly adopted animal is taken to a local Veterinarian within the first 48 hours the animal will receive a free health exam.

The reclaim fee is $15.00 plus $5.00 per day after the first 24 hours.

Beaufort County is a small shelter that serves a large county. There are many animals housed at the shelter that are available for adoption, it is not possible to list all the animals and keep them for long periods of time. You are welcome to visit or call the shelter when you are looking for that special animal to make your family complete.

Please Note

No animal can be held for adoption for any individual person. Animals are adopted on a first come first serve basis. We are a small rural county faculty, with a staff of only 4 people. Unfortunately, shipping or arranging transport of any animal is not an option for us.
