Our Mission

The Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been helping animals in our community since 1970, and has managed the Durham County Animal Shelter since 1990. In addition to county funding, APS relies on donations from caring individuals and corporations to feed, shelter and provide medical attention for the nearly 7,000 stray, surrendered, abandoned, abused and neglected animals we care for each year.

Our Mission:

The APS of Durham is a leader in building lifelong bonds between people and animals through education, community outreach and providing care for animals in need.

Our Vision:

There are no displaced or unwanted pets; all animals are treated with compassion and respect, and community services are available to all pet owners.

Adoption Policy

Email adopt@apsofdurham.org for more information about adopting.

You are welcome to look at the animals anytime during our business hours. If there is a particular animal that interests you, we ask that you complete an adoption application form, and then you can meet with that animal in one of our visitation rooms. If you have questions, an adoption counselor will be happy to help you select an animal that fits your lifestyle and expectations.

Due to the time and consideration given to each adoption, no application can be processed nor can a visit take place within 30 minutes of closing time. We want you to have plenty of time to make a decision that will affect you and your potential pet for its lifetime.

Each adoption is approved on an individual basis. Some animals may not be considered appropriate for your particular situation, and s
