Animal Protection Society of Person County, APSofPC, is an IRS recognized non-profit 501c3 organization. We are a group of volunteers that open our hearts and homes to the homeless, neglected, abused animals.
We also rescue animals from the shelter that are in danger of being euthanized. We take great pride in our adoption program. All of our animals rescued are placed in to foster care where they receive love, nourishment, and medical care.
Our adoption fee ranges from $75 - $400 and includes spay - neuter, vaccinations, heart worm test, any necessary medical needs the animal incurred while in our care.
We are adoption partners with PetSmart and frequently take our adoptable pets to PetSmart-Northpointe Drive in Durham. We occasionally have an Adopt-a-Thon at the Main Street Pavilion in Roxboro, NC. Check with us for the next Adopt-a-Thon date.
We operate solely on private contributions from our supporters and are very grateful for their support.

Donations are fully tax deductible by IRS Rules.

Become a foster for APSofPC
Do you feel disturbed by the sight of a hungry dog, an injured cat, or a stray homeless mama dog with puppies?
Do you want to do something to mitigate their suffering?
Become a foster parent and help these forgotten animals. Sometimes they just need a little more time to find their forever home.
Who can foster?
The APSofPC is in need of foster parents year round. In addition to rescuing animals that are homeless, needy, and abandoned, we also rescue animals from the high kill gassing shelter here in Person County, NC whose time has run out.
These grateful animals are placed into temporary homes so they can receive the socialization, love and extra care they need while waiting to find their forever home.
What are the requirements?
Prospective foster parents may download a foster application and return it by US Mail.
Once approved as a potential foster program applicant the next step is a home visit and personal interview.
Following the interview we will then contact you with a foster opportunity that matches your environment.
The need for foster parents is always there. The more volunteers we receive the more animals we can save.
What are the expenses?
The APSofPC provides all the supplies needed to care for the foster animals.
This includes:
- food
- litter
- medications
- bedding
- toys
- other enrichment items
- veterinary care
However, any of the materials that you can provide will help offset costs and will go a long way to saving more animals.
Fostering instills a huge sense of accomplishment because you single handedly give a pet a second chance at life! Without foster parents hundreds of animals never receive the opportunity to find a loving home.
A foster animal becomes part of your family and will love you unconditionally and be forever grateful for a second chance
Animals in a shelter environment
Due to the influx of animals and no spay/neuter laws, the euthanasia rate is high at the our local County shelter. Most of the animals that are euthanized at Person County shelter are gassed in the gas chambers. We are actively involved with legislation to ban this method of euthanasia and allowing euthanasis by lethal injection ONLY when necessary.
Euthanasia by injection of sodium pentobarbital is the method used in veterinarians' offices, and is recommended by EVERY national humane organization in the United States as the most humane, safest, least stressful, and cost effective. It takes only seconds and the animal falls peacefully asleep, with an overdose of an anesthetic.
Injection is typically done in the leg for adult animals, or in the tummy for smaller animal This should not be confused with intracardiac injections, which is not humane if done without anesthesias. Twenty seven counties out of the one hundred counties in North Carolina are still using the gas chamber, Person County being one of them, and we have hopes of eliminating this practice across the state of NC.
We need your voice to help us in this effort to remove the gas chamber from Person County Animal Shelter. Please consider writing or calling our representatives for Person County to ask them to ban the use of gas chamber at Person County Animal Shelter.
"Helpless animals die everyday because people just get tired of them and take them to the shelter."
