Stray dogs and cats are kept at the facility for a minimum of three
days prior to euthanasia, while owner-surrendered animals may be (but are not always) euthanized immediately.
FCHS recommends that all animals adopted from the facility be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible, quarantined for 10 days prior to exposure to other pets, and be vaccinated, particularly for rabies, and spayed/neutered. It is also a good idea to have a topical flea and tick treatment (e.g., Frontline Plus) ready for dogs and cats pulled during warm-weather months. FCHS volunteers take pictures of all adoptable animals and place them on the Petfinder Web site twice each week.
This has lead to numerous adoptions and reunions of owners and lost pets. FCHS pulls adoptable dogs and cats from the animal control facility and places them in its foster program or transports them to other rescue groups (eg, breed rescues) as time and finances permit.
Further, other rescue groups regularly visit the Petfinder site and work with FCHS volunteers to pull adoptable dogs and cats from the facility. Unfortunately, we cannot save all adoptable animals, but with the help of many other groups and individuals, close to 1000 dogs and cats were saved in 2007!
Without the help of these other rescuers, fewer animals would find forever homes, and their work and compassion is greatly appreciated. If you have a question about an animal in the facility or need to retrieve a lost pet, please call animal control at 919-496-3032 , Fax 919-496-4876 . If no one answers, please leave a message, as the animal control officers are often out responding to other calls. (They cannot return long distance
phone calls.) If you need assistance
removing a pet from the facility please call or email Julie
at 919-990-1046. If you have general questions about FCHS or the animals in our foster program, please call 919-990-1045, and a volunteer will return your call.
