DIRECTIONS

From Asheville, travel I-26 West to exit #9 ( Burnsville exit). From here travel US 19 for 12.5 miles. Look for green signs that say "Yancey Co. Animal Shelter" and turn left onto Cane River Church Road. At the stop sign go straight onto paved drive and we are at the bottom of the hill.

HOW DO YOU PRODUCE 80 MILLION CATS?

It's simple. Just allow two cats and their offspring to breed for 10 years. In that time, you'll have produced 80,399,780 cats(this assumes two litters per year and 2.8 surviving kittens per litter).

Humans simply do not produce at these outrageous rates. Nor does every human born want a kitten.And since every cat needs a human (that's what domestic means), this adds up to a great deal of unwanted kittens and cats in our community. Although all of our adopted pets are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption, an animal who is already "fixed" and ready to go has a much better chance of getting adopted. When you sponsor a homeless animal you can help insure their speedy adoption and the opportunity to go directly home and start their new life of comfort and happiness! For $50.00 you can get any dog or cat spayed or neutered! For $10.00 you can sponsor a rabies vaccination and for $5.00, a booster vaccination. WHY SPAY AND NEUTER? Each year more than 12 MILLION dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies, including 25% purebreds, end up in America's animal shelters. Whether lost, abandoned, or given up, most animals are a result of irresponsible ownership and uncontrolled breeding. Sadly, nearly 8 million of those animals are killed because there are simply NOT ENOUGH HOMES for them all. Millions more never make it to the shelter.
IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR PETS: 1) Spayed and neutered cats and dogs live longer, healthier lives. 2) It GREATLY reduces cancer and other hormone-related medical disorders in dogs and cats. 3) Neutered animals are less likely to roam, bite, or fight. 4) Animals have NO psychological need to reproduce.

Winterfest and the Burnsville Christmas Parade - Dec. 1, 2012!
Don't forgot YHS as we enter the holiday season. We will be at Winterfest in the Burnsviille Town Center on Dec. 1, 2012. We will also have as many furry babies as possible in the Burnsville Christmas Parade. Volunteer opportunities are always available as well.

Who We Are
The Yancey Humane Society & Animal Shelter is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, just 30 miles north of Asheville. We take in most animals brought to us: including all strays, feral dogs, cats, and personal pets on a case by case basis. We provide a loving temporary home until they can be placed in a permanent home. We are not a "no kill" shelter, however, we do not have a time limit. We treat all animals as individuals and temperament test them for adoptability. This way, no one slips through the system, and we know each and every personality in the house. YHS veterinary services are provided by Dr. Ted Wright and Dr. Margaret Moncure of Cedar Ridge Animal Hospital in Asheville who serve as Veterinarians of Record for the shelter. If you are looking for a pet, consider adopting from YHS. We will do our best to help match you with the perfect friend who will fit your lifestyle.

We are located next to the Cane River Middle School, at 962 Cane River School Road, just west of town.

Our shelter hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 12pm til 5pm, and on Saturday from 12pm til 4pm. Closed Sunday and Wednesday.

Adopting a Friend

Currently, our LOCAL (Yancey, Mitchell, and Madison Counties only) adoption fee for cats and dogs is $65. Occasionally, we have reduced fees based on the shelter population. Our normal OUT-OF-AREA adoption fee is $85 for dogs and cats. Cats and kittens are currently two for one adoption fee. This fee includes worming, age appropriate vaccinations, micro-chipping, and basic spay/neuter costs. All animals will be spayed or neutered before going home.
NEW: You may now pay our adoption fee via PayPal. Just go back to our 'donation' area and pay via PayPal, specifying that the amount is for the adoption of a certain named animal. Include your name, address,and phone number. There is a $3.00 service fee added on to the adoption fee if you use PayPal.

Volunteering and Donations

Our three mainstays vital to funding our Animal Shelter remain donations, memberships and fundraisers. From mail-in donations to store counter "doggie banks", every penny goes to the welfare of these animals. We, also, accept donations to memorialize a lost pet or favorite animal lover. Donations make great gifts for the animal lovers in your life. At the shelter we have a pet store where you can create goodie bags for your favorite pooch or kitty, with all proceeds helping their furry friends.

SHELTER NEWS: We would like donations of costume jewelry, even if it is broken, to use for a project to benefit the shelter animals! Donations may be dropped off at the shelter during normal business hours.

Spaying and neutering pets is the answer to pet overpopulation!
We are always looking for volunteers. Volunteers can work in the shelter facility or help away from the shelter. The critters love having you come and play with them! It is great exercise to walk the dogs. If you can assist with behavior training of dogs and puppies, stop by the Shelter because you can help prepare them for adoption! If you have any questions, just call!

We accept donations of cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and paper goods. Any food donated will be used for the "Meals on Wheels" program. We are now participating in Hill's Science Diet "Shelter Nutrition Program" so we can not use other brands for our pets here at the shelter. SEAMSTRESSES are ALWAYS needed to sew dog pads. Please, let us know if you can lend a hand!
