A Little Bit About Catahoula Rescue Inc.

We are a national 501c3 rescue that place Catahoula Leopard Dogs with people like you who can help change their lives forever. We need you. These dogs come from high kill shelters and we do our best to save them all, but because of overpopulation and back yard breeders, we will never be able to keep up. The good news is, we will never give up either. Have a look at our pet list and save a life today.

Our Featured Pet...SHADOW-URGENT!

SHADOW was placed in a shelter in Placerville California. The shelter people I have spoken with since rescuing him. They all love him. He did fine with play days at the shelter, he did agility and excelled. They agree with my evaluation of him. He is very insecure and comes on in a defensive way, but up until recently it only manifested itself by mouthing hands and elbows of his humans. HE HAS NEVER SHOWN HUMAN AGRESSION WHATSOEVER and when a dog mouths it is always because they don't know what to do or what is expected of them. Shadow was rescued four months ago, placed in a foster home. Shortly after his placement he was riding with his foster mom in a snowstorm and they had a wreck, a bad one. Shadow was shook up but his Mum needed him and he stuck to her like glue while they walked in the dark for help. She was in shock, he kept her going. LOYALTY is the word. His foster Mum and he bonded tightly and she adopted him. Four months later out of the blue it seemed, their older male dog started fights with Shadow and he took the offensive, taking the dog on. So they asked us to move shadow. He was not the aggressor at first but after they got crossways, the other dog kept triggering things in shadow and so he got serious about this.. the best defense is a good offense. Now Shadow is in a temporary foster home and is settling in and they are finding him a wonderful people dog. In fact Shadow would shrivel up and die in a kennel environment.. he needs to be with his people. All he wants is to share treats and learn tricks and be loved and take care of his people. He will not now get along with male dogs. We will not place him with males. We are considering testing him out on females. To date he has not bothered females at all but we are going to be careful here in trying to evaluate him. The shelter people are very concerned about him bouncing, we all agree that most dogs would have not trusted again, but he has given his heart again and again. How much can a dog take being here there and yonder? We don't know but we want Shadow to find a forever home. Because of his rugged puppish ways we feel he would be too rough in play to little children so we aren't placing him with them and he has prey drive so kitty cats are out. Surely there is someone that would like Shadow for their friend, companion, protector. SURELY this great dog isn't going to just wither away and be lost? SURELY???? If anyone out there would like Shadow, remember his time is not unlimited. He is a low special needs dog. Shadow is very sweet. He wants to be loved and please people more than he wants to play, more than treats, toys, or being outside. He has won the hearts of everyone who has met him. Shadow's happy-go-lucky personality, intelligence, and love for people wins our hearts. He's a joy to train because he's not only smart, but when he's corrected, he doesn't mope or complain. He tries to please you. For instance, in one week, he learned to stop jumping on people and mouthing hands and elbows when he meets them, and/or plays. He loves to fetch and actually brings the ball back to the person who threw it. Shadow loves his treats; rewards like praise and treats are how he learns. He lets me take his bone or toy from his mouth with no complaint. Although he'd rather stay glued to your hip (like a Shadow), he goes right into his crate when you ask him. He's also an excellent guard dog. Shadow deserves a forever family to give his love and loyalty to. To DATE all leads have reached a dead end for a new adopter for Shadow. He can't figure out why no one has picked him, nor can we. Not every dog has to love kids and other dogs and cats, they are individuals. Please consider Shadow. We will work with anyone will help Shadow-he needs a loving, committed family who will love him and give him the boundaries he needs along with the attention and love he deserves!

Who We Are

Catahoula Rescue Inc. is a non-profit group comprised of volunteers all over the United States and Canada aimed at saving as many Catahoulas as possible. But for as many people as there are-the need is greater! We need volunteers FOR MANY things! Go to Catahoula Rescue for more information. We need YOU to help us. Become a Foster or volunteer in many other ways in your state. All too often, we as volunteers get discouraged when it seems we lose more battles than we win-for lack of resources! PLEASE! If you have ever thought about helping, understand that we need you-and more, the DOGS need you! EVERY hand counts in saving these precious lives! We must stand up and be their voice!

Adopting a friend

We at Catahoula Rescue, The Great Northwest strive very hard to find wonderful adoptive homes for the dogs under our care. We carefully consider all the needs of the prospective adoptive home and weigh them against the needs of our very special dogs. We want to make sure that our adoptive families are as happy with their new family member as they expected to be, and that our dogs find the loving, permanent homes they deserve. After careful screening, we have found we have a wonderful sucess rate, and our dogs and their new families are thrilled to have become part of each other's lives! It may seem hard at the time, but the process is well worth the results!

Let your heart look at our fosters-and revel in our happy tails! Perhaps one will come and live with YOU!

One way you can help!
