Featured Pet

Vandie is a 6 to 7 year old standard poodle. he was turned into a shetler by his owners because he was too big. he was starved and very neglected. Vandie is heartworm positive but treatable. He has sarcoptic mange and is being treated for that at this time. He has ear and eye infections and is very underweight. Vandie has been miserable with severe itching and hair loss and the infections. But with everything going on with him he is an absolute love. He is very sweet and well behaved. Vandie likes his crate and will go in on his own for naps.. Vandie will have about 3 months of recovery with us. We will begin heartworm treatment as soon as he is over the mange and infections and has put on weight. If you would like to help Vandie please donate fior his medical care.
Update. Vandie has had two treatments for mange and has two more to go. he is severely underweight and he is back at the vets for infected feet.
Update 5/8/09 Vandie has finsihed the treatment for mange. His feet are improved. He is not gaining weight as he should so the vets have put him on a probiotic to help. He has had so much to overcome and being so underweight on arrival he has had nothing to fight the infections with. He is improving and we are anticipating a gret outcome. He will be treated for heartworms when he can withstand the treatment. Vandie is such great guy and so deserves to be healthy and have a wonderful home.

Who We Are

Southern Paws Rescue is a small organization that rescues Standard Poodles and places them in a home that is suited for the poodles specific needs. We also rescue non-specific breed dogs ensuring that all of Southern Paws Rescues will have a home for a lifetime and become a cherished family member. We are a non-profit, no kill rescue serving the community and surrounding areas. Our goal is to rehab and re-home all of our rescues to permanent and loving homes and to promote spaying and neutering.

Adopting a friend

We work with veterinarians, other rescue organizations and volunteers to care for and place the rescues in appropriate homes. All applicants are carefully screened and must meet certain qualifications before placement. You must be 21 years of age in order to fill out an application. Submitting an application does not guarantee adoption. All of the rescues are vetted, spayed/neutered and current on vaccinations before placement. If adopting a Standard Poodle please consider that they do not shed and require regular grooming and the cost may range from 50 to 70 dollars. Toy poodles 25 to 30 dollars. Grooming should be done every 6 to 8 weeks. Their ears must be cleaned on a weekly basis and the hair inside the ear should be plucked monthly to avoid any ear problems. They do require regular brushing and bathing. Standard Poodle's are very proud, elegant, highly intelligent and one of the most trainable breeds. They enjoy human companionship and do not like to be alone. They are wonderful indoor companions and do require some exercise. Our fosters are in homes, in a family environment that provide love and understanding. The time spent in foster care provides the animal with an adjustment period before placement. This time will vary from a few weeks to a few months. We do not take aggressive dogs or biters. We do not ship any of our rescues.

"I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry. "God", I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment, and then he spoke softly"I have done something", he replied, "I created you." - Author Unknown-

Rescue dogs remember where they have been. Those that are lucky enough to get out shelters know that not all dogs make it out alive. They remember what its like to go without food or clean water for days. They remember sleeping in the mud, dodging cars and braving the elements. They also remember the homes where they were loved and a part of the family,or a home where they were never loved and abused. They don't understand why they were dumped in the country or in a local shelter, or why people with trucks and cages picked them up , took them to the shelter and no one ever came to get them. Surely there was some small space for these guys in their families new home. Surely the new baby would have loved having a canine guardian, or when family's move, there had to be room for all the family which included the furkid . When they get old they need love and care just as we do . We are not thrown away or euthanized because we are old. They suffer emotional loss just like us. Because these dogs know how hard life can be, when adopted into their forever homes, they tend to be the most loyal dedicated pets ever. When you adopt you are taking home the best friend you will ever have. Give a rescue a chance. No one could ever love you more!!!!
