IMPORTANT NOTE

Due to space and funding limitations, we are not currently accepting new dogs into our program. We have 3 medically needy dogs in rescue right now that have completely drained our resources, with no end in sight.

If you are interested in adopting, fostering or sponsoring a Mid-south Shepherd, please feel free to contact us.

Please Help Us Help Them!

As of May 23, 2008, the balance on our vet bill is $4,937.71. This is JUST our primary vet bill, and does not include other daily expenses, as well as additional medical bills for some of our dogs who need to see specialists (for example, orthopedic surgeries). These costs are mounting daily, as we have ongoing expenses and are always testing, spaying/neutering and heartworm treating new dogs as they come into rescue. Our adoption fee of $250 is the ONLY funding source we have, and it doesn't go very far when some of our rescues have bills of $1000+. Please help us continue to help them. Tax deductible donations an be made by clicking the following link, or by snail mail to:
MSSR, P.O. Box 542, Nesbit, MS 38651. NO amount is too small. If you think you can't make a difference, think again!

Who We Are

Mid-South Shepherd Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organzation dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of German Shepherd Dogs in need. Most of the dogs in our program are rescued from high kill shelters. To learn more about our policies and the areas we cover, visit us at http://msgsdr.com.

When we take in a GSD, we make a committment to that dog to resolve any health and/or behavioral issues and find a home that will fit his or her needs. We take this committment very seriously. We often take in dogs with serious health issues that would otherwise have no chance. That is what true rescue is all about to us.

Our Featured Pet

Our featured pet for February is Tara! Tara is a sweet, gorgeous, 5 year old female GSD. To read Tara's full story, and learn more about her, please click on her picture above!

Adopting a friend

A $250 tax deductible donation is required to adopt one of the dogs in our program. Before being placed, all our dogs are examined by a vet, brought up to date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered, heartworm checked and treated as necessary, microchipped, and will have a clean bill of health before being placed. While we do everything in our power to make sure all health and behavioral issues are resolved before placement, we cannot guarantee that health or behavioral issues will not develop. We are, however, committed to our dogs for the duration of their natural life, and will always make ourselves available to assist with any issues that may arise.

Our adoption process involves an application, vet reference, personal references and a home visit. We will bring the dog with us for the home visit. This helps us to determine if the dog you are interested in will be a good match for you and your family, as well as any other pets you might have. We do adopt outside our geographical area, but you must be somewhere that a home visit can be scheduled. To get the adoption process started, please fill out our Application!

FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED

Foster homes are the single most important part of rescue.

It has been a particularly busy year for us. Unfortunately, we have not been able to do as much as we would like to do because of space limitations. If you have EVER thought you might like to foster, NOW IS THE TIME! The GSDs of the midsouth need YOU to provide a safe haven for them while we take care of their medical needs and search for that perfect furever home where they will be loved and cherished for the rest of their lives. Please act now; there are dogs dying in shelters EVERY DAY due to lack of space at our rescue.

Our dogs are not kept in shelters; they are kept in homes to assist them with any behavioral issues they may have and prepare them for the transition into your home as a much-loved family member. Fostering is a very rewarding experience. There's no way to describe the feeling you get when you devote yourself to helping heal a dog that has previously had bad experiences with people. Yes, you get attached to them all, but in the end, when you see the dog you have worked with go to that perfect home, and know that you helped make that possible...it's a feeling you don't ever forget.

While all adoptions must be approved by the director of the rescues, we rely greatly on the advice and input of the foster parent, as you know the dog better than anyone. No dog will ever be adopted into a home if the foster parent is not in agreement. All vet expenses are paid by rescue, food is provided, as well as a crate and anything else your foster needs.

To find out more about becoming a foster parent, please visit us at http://msgsdr.com.

Sponsor a Mid-South Shepherd

Many people love GSDs, but for one reason or another are unable to have one of their own. If you are one of those people, but would like to help one of our GSDs in preparation for his forever home, please consider sponsorship. A sponsor agrees to fund the medical bills of one of the dogs in our rescue program. This normally involves, shots, spay/neuter, and any necessary medications (such as for worming, etc.). Unfortunately, many of our guys come to us heartworm positive. In such cases, we understand if the treatment can't be included in your sponsorship. If it can, all the better! You'll receive pictures and detailed information about the dog you choose to sponsor, and will be kept up to date on his/her progress. Alternately, one time donations are much appreciated. 100% of all donations go towards the care and medical costs of preparing our dogs for their new lives. All donations and sponsorships are tax deductible.

My Heart Will Go On...

Heartworm disease is the single most common medical condition faced by most of the GSDs we rescue. This year so far, we have treated over 20 dogs, with more on the horizon.
We are a small rescue that relies solely on adoption fees, donations from generous members of our community and our own personal funds to continue our work. The expense of heartworm treatment is very taxing on our limited resources. Average cost is between $300 - $400.
If you would like to sponsor heartworm treatment for one of our very deserving rescues, you may do so in one of 2 ways:
Go to our donation page for our mailing address to send a check, or click the button there to make a donation via Paypal
- or -
Send a check directly to our vet (address has been removed due to people using it as a means to contact us about dumping their dog instead of HELPING the ones we are trying to save. Please email for contact info) or email us for the phone number to use a credit card.
