MOGS (MIssouri German Shepherd Rescue) is a newer breed-specific group based out of Kansas City, MO. We also have a large contingency of volunteers and rescued dogs in the Wichita, KS and Lincoln/Omaha, NE areas. Our focus is German Shepherd Dogs. However, we will help other breeds and GSD mixes as we are able to do so. We are a regional rescue operating as a series of foster homes. We do not have a shelter or physical facility.
Adoption Fees and Policies
Our adoption fees range from $125-$350 depending on purity of breed and age of the animal. These fees are in-line with other breed specific rescues and are non-negotiable. These fees help us recoup the costs of veterinary services. Unlike some groups, MOGS accepts heartworm positive and critical care cases as we are able to do so. All MOGS dogs are spayed or neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm tested, wormed and microchipped when they go to their forever homes. Please understand we also incur substantial costs to transport, feed, board, and keep up with heartworm and flea/tick prevention while the dogs are in our care and awaiting adoption.
We do not adopt out unaltered dogs, nor will we adopt to homes which currently have unaltered animals. As rescuers, we cannot contribute to, or countenance the ongoing problems of pet overpopulation and irresponsible breeding.
Fences: While a secure, fenced area is highly desirable for containment and exercise, the lack of a fence is not an automatic refusal. However, adopters must be committed to walking their GSD daily on leash. We will not adopt to persons who intend to let their dog run loose. We do not consider this safe even in a rural setting as your dog could be hit by a car, attacked by another animal, or simply run away. After all the time, effort and love we put into rescuing these dogs, we cannot risk their safety. We also do not recommend or endorse the use of invisible type fencing, although exceptions may be made in certain cases.
Our application process is straightforward. Please email us about the pet you are interested in. We will send you an application form to fill out, which includes personal references and a vet reference. After your application is approved, a brief home visit is arranged so that we may get an idea of your lifestyle, energy level, etc. and match you with the best available MOGS dog.
MOGS will not adopt dogs to owners who intend to keep them only as outside pets. We will also not adopt out dogs to persons intent on training them to be guard or attack dogs. We strive for balanced, well-behaved family pets, and are working to eliminate the stereotype that the German Shepherd Dog is a dangerous breed.
Please consider the following when adopting a German Shepherd:
GSDs are highly intelligent dogs requiring appropriate exercise, direction, training and leadership. GSDs are large dogs averaging 65-85 pounds, with some even larger. They are double-coated, require a moderate amount of bathing and grooming, and shed year round. Lastly, it will cost upwards of $800 a year or more to care for your new family member.
Angel's Fund
Angel's Fund -
Many rescues turn away dogs that need critical care because the financial burden is just too great. We have opted to take them in and try to save them. But to do that we need your help and financial support!
Last year we had four critical care cases costing us thousands of dollars. And we're glad to report they're all doing well! Currently, we have many heartworm positive dogs that require expensive treatment, and a few others that have had or are awaiting surgery for various conditions.
For this reason we've started "Angel's Fund", named after our first critical care german shepherd, Angel. Her name fits this part of our rescue mission: to help even those dogs with special medical needs.
Angel's Fund is a critical care fund to help the very special furkids who need more than standard vetting, but still deserve a shot at life. Right now we're still paying off past treatments and surgeries, but we would like to build a reserve to help more special cases in the future.
Please help us build Angel's Fund! We need to build a reserve so we can help the next german shepherd in need. We have been financing all this from our own pockets and are simply not able to do that anymore. ANY amount is GREATLY appreciated!! Together, our $5 and $10 and $20 donations make a huge difference to the Angels of this world.
THANK YOU for caring and acting!!!! We love you all :-)
