OUR MISSION

PEAR TREE Avian Sanctuary provides placement for unwanted psittacines. We rescue, rehabilitate, and adopt out relinquished parrots. In extreme cases we offer a permanent home. PEAR TREE offers parrot owners education and assistance with basic bird care, nutrition, and behavior issues.

Parrot Education, Adoption, & Rehabilitation (PEAR) serves as a temporary sanctuary facility for exotic birds. At PEAR TREE we strive to educate about the responsibilities of companion parrot ownership, as well as proper care techniques. When a bird owner is unable to keep their pet, we provide the means to find a loving, suitable new home.

Each surrendered parrot undergoes careful evaluation to determine proper future placement. After arrival, many displaced parrots need rehabilitation for a variety of behavioral problems. The majority; however, require radical changes to their diet. Poor nutrition in companion parrots is a leading cause of both physical and medical problems including: vitamin deficiencies; fatty liver disease; increased hormone levels; chronic egg laying; and feather destruction.

PEAR TREE Avian Sanctuary was incorporated in the state of Missouri on February 8, 2005, and is a 501(c)(3)tax exempt, non-profit charitable organization.

PEAR TREE serves Southwest Missouri and surrounding areas; including parts of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

Who We Are

Erin Sorensen founded PEAR TREE while working as a zoo keeper at Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri. As a keeper she discovered the large number of calls received from people wanting to donate their pet birds to the zoo. Since the zoo is unable to take any of these birds in, many people were sent on their way to find another option for their bird. Erin started taking these phone calls and offered advice on behavior and nutrition as a first option, to help the owners live happily with their birds. For more immediate cases, she offered to find a better living situation through adoption. Soon the need for parrot education, adoption, and rehabilitation in this area grew - so PEAR TREE was founded. Although we are still in the infancy stages, PEAR TREE offers behavior consultation, education, diet and behavior modification, as well as new homes for birds in need.

Adopting a friend

PEAR TREE Adoption Process:

Often times a parrot owner can no longer care for the demands of their feathered friend, and must find a new home. That's where PEAR TREE AVIAN SANCTUARY steps in to help. We do not adopt birds out to just anyone, and we are not in this business for the money. We are a non-profit organization whose primary concern is the welfare of these intelligent, long-lived, majestic creatures. We provide a service to find the best possible living situation for surrendered parrots.

There are a number of steps in the process of finding a suitable new home for a parrot. First, the owner must fill out an Acquisition Agreement. This form includes a brief parrot history, as well as transfer of ownership to PEAR TREE AVIAN SANCTUARY. Once ownership has been transferred; the bird is then housed either at our facility, or at an approved foster home. Medical and physical evaluations are performed, and the parrot's history is assessed. The evaluations determine if medical treatment, diet change, behavior modification, or rehabilitation is required. We then assist with any necessary changes. During the bird's stay at PEAR TREE AVIAN SANCTUARY we also work on socialization skills. Most pet parrots bond to their owners and are often aggressive towards others. Through proper socialization, parrots become less discriminate, and in turn, are friendlier to a variety of people. Once the parrot is ready for adoption, an appropriate, loving home must be found.

Parrots available for adoption are featured on our website and listed through our sanctuary network. Interested candidates contact PEAR TREE AVIAN SANCTUARY and fill out an Adoption Application. This form asks a variety of questions to determine whether or not the person is experienced and/or knowledgeable. The application also helps us to fit the bird into the proper environment and schedule it will be most comfortable with. Applicants are then interviewed over the phone. Again many questions are both asked and answered. If the candidate fails to meet our standards, in some cases we offer pet bird education and training. If we feel the applicant may be suitable, we proceed to the next step. Depending on the individual situation and location of applicant, one or more of the following may be scheduled: an interview in person; a home inspection; visitations between the applicant and the parrot; a training session for the applicant. Once a match has been made between applicant and parrot, an Adoption Agreement is signed, an adoption fee is paid, and transportation is arranged.
PEAR TREE AVIAN SANCTUARY offers post-adoption education, training, and counseling to the new owner. We also provide information and updates to the previous owner upon request. In some cases, when both parties agree, contact information between the previous owner and the new owner are exchanged.

If you have questions or comments regarding this process, please e-mail me or contact my office.

DISLCLAIMER:

PEAR TREE is still in the process of building our initial facility. Currently the only birds PEAR TREE is able to physically take-in are urgent cases. However, many birds in the area still need to find new homes. Under these circumstances some birds up for adoption have not had ownership transferred to PEAR TREE and are still under the care of their current owners. PEAR TREE has not had these birds medically examined or blood tested for avian disease. These birds have not been quarantined by PEAR TREE. Although most have been worked with on behavior and aided in diet modification, most of these birds are still in need of behavior modification.and diet transition. Each individual case will be discussed with potential adopters and will be advised accordingly. PEAR TREE strongly urges parrot owners adopting a parrot through this service to take their new pet to an AVIAN Veterinarian and test for Polyoma, Psittacosis, PBFD, and Pacheco's Virus in addition to a complete avian panel - CBC, Chemistry, fecal and gram stain. PEAR TREE also advises current parrot owners to quarantine their newly adopted companion away from other parrots in the household for at least 30 days to monitor health and get test results back. PEAR TREE suggests to make sure all birds within a household have been given a clean bill of health through an avian veterinarian prior to introductions.
