Who We Are

Clinton Animal Rescue Endeavor (CARE) operates the local animal shelter, which is located at 1307 North Washington Street, Clinton, Missouri 64735. CARE began organizing in October of 2007, to begin discussions about improving conditions at the animal shelter and possible control of shelter operations. The operation of the shelter with CARE began December 4, 2007, with the cooperation of the City of Clinton until March 1st, 2008, when complete charge was given to the organization through a lease contract.

CARE began organizing with five priorities in mind to keep in focus. Those five priorities are 1) To preserve the life of as many companion animals as possible, 2) To provide temporary shelter for homeless companion animals, and place these animals in suitable permanent homes, 3) To reduce companion animal overpopulation, 4) To provide education and outreach activities regarding companion animal care to the community, 5) To generate the funds necessary to maintain a quality shelter facility and operation. The mission statement established is that "The mission of CARE is to prevent abuse, promote adoption, and educate the public in the proper and ethical care and treatment of companion animals."

CARE is trying to maintain the Clinton Animal Shelter as a low kill facility. What is a low kill animal shelter? A low kill facility tries not to put down animals and their euthanasia rate compared to the adoption rate is minimal, but there are circumstances that an animal may have to be put. These circumstances include, but are not limited to: illness, extreme behavioral issues, and possibly in extreme cases of overpopulation. The shelter is not an appropriate place for any animal; diseases run rampant, animals can go cage crazy or depressed, and there is an extreme overpopulation throughout the community with owners who do not take responsibility and the facility easily becomes over capacity.

How can you help to maintain the Clinton Animal Shelter as a low kill facility? Adopt your next pet from the shelter and not purchase from breeders. Ask about being a volunteer or being a foster home for an animal to remove them from the shelter environment, but help to find their fur-ever home. Be responsible with your own pets: have them spay or neutered, have your pets properly tagged with your name and contact information, do not let your pet run loose, keep up-to-date on all the vaccinations, and if you are unable to keep your pet for yourself find them an appropriate home to go to.

Adopting a friend

Adoption of the animals include them being spay or neutered, rabies vaccination, along with a distemper/parvo combo and bordetella for dogs and FVRCP for cats, and dogs get microchipped. The cost of the adoption is generally $60 for cats, $75 for the regular “mutt” dog, and $125 for a high-profile dog that is of a distinguishable breed or is a puppy under 6 months of age. However, to help promote the adoptions of animals then occasionally approved “specials” are made for discount prices, but “specials” still include everything that is provided by a regular adoption. Adopters must be 18 years of age.

Volunteering and Donations

CARE is operated through the cooperation of volunteers and donations of supplies and money. Without the many volunteer hours given weekly the operation of the shelter would be impossible. Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to: cleaning pens and dishes, feeding and watering the animals, cuddling cats, walking the dogs, and answering the phones. If you are not able to volunteer in the shelter, but want to help the animals consider being a temporary home for a shelter animal and be a foster home.   Send donations and your information about wanting to volunteer or foster to CARE at PO Box 778, Clinton, Missouri 64735.
