Inspiration
What is below will help you realize what hard times all shelters have to go though.
As a nation, we claim to love cats and dogs. Millions of households have pets, and billions of dollars are spent yearly on pet supplies and food. But, as a nation, we should take a hard, sobering look at a different annual statistic: the millions of dogs and cats given up to shelters or left to die on the streets. And the numbers tell only half the story.
Every cat or dog who dies as a result of pet overpopulation—whether humanely in a shelter or by injury, disease, or neglect—is an animal who, more often than not, would have made a wonderful companion, if given the chance. Tremendous as the problem of pet overpopulation is, it can be solved if each of us takes just one small step, starting with not allowing our animals to breed. Click on the photo below to watch this inspiring video and for information about this crisis and why spaying and neutering is the first step to a solution.
There are 6-8 million cats and dogs that are bought into the shelters each year. Of that number, 3-4 million of them are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them. -- Humane Society of the United States
Two uncontrolled breeding cats have two litters a year. In the first year 12 cats have been produced. In year two, 66 cats are produced. In year three, 2,201 cats are produced. In year four, 3,822 cats are produced. In year five, 12,680 cats are produced. In ten years, this number climbs to a staggering 80,338,780 cats.
There are 10,000 babies born each day. Within the same time, an incredible 70,000 puppies and kittens enter the world.
"People who let their dogs and cats have litters in order to show their children the 'miracle of birth' should come witness the 'miracle of death' performed in the back rooms of animals shelters all over the country." Phyllis Wright- Humane Society of the United States
For every animal euthanized in a shelter, there is a human outside the walls for that shelters responsible for its death.
Shelter workers do the dirty work for the community members who continue to breed despite overpopulation, dumping their guilt on us and shifting the blame onto shelter staff for a problem they created themselves.
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion..."
All they ever wanted was a warm loving home they could call paradise and people that care about them.
There are no bad animals, only bad owners.
Animal ownership have traditionally been held as a right. It needs to be a revocable privilege.
If these animals could tell you one thing about being in a shelter, it would probably be "Amen, I'm alive!"
