We do not ship animals, nor allow an animal to be shipped in the cargo of an airplane. If you live out of town, you will need to arrange a way to pick the animal up from the shelter or arrange a transport . Sorry for any inconvenience.

What is the CMHS Most Wanted Program?

The CMHS Most Wanted Program is designed to help us place highly sought after dogs in appropriate homes. We take applications on the animal and keep a list of possible adopters. From this list management will choose a home, based on this animal's certain needs, etc. There is no specified time limit to when a home will be chosen for Most Wanted animals. When the home is chosen, all that have been considered for the animal will be contacted.

Who We Are

The Central Missouri Humane Society was founded in 1943 to prevent cruelty to and suffering of non-human animals. The CMHS is a private, non profit organization that promotes animal welfare and provides public education concerning the proper care and treatment of animals. Our building, the Marguerite Doe Memorial Shelter, serves as an adoption agency for homeless and unwanted dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats, ferrets, birds and many more. We are committed to responsible pet ownership and solving the catastrophic problem of pet overpopulation.

Adoption Procedure

The following is an outline of our pet adoption program:

~*~If you are considering the responsibility of adopting a pet, please look through our shelter. If you see a dog or cat that you are interested in, please fill out an adoption application and hand it to an adoption counselor.

~*~ With the help of your adoption counselor, you will complete the adoption application. You and your counselor will discuss your lifestyle and your requirements for a pet and determine whether the pet you have selected would be compatible. The adoption must be in the best interests of both the pet and you.

~*~ Adoption applications may take more than a day to complete, and our staff sometimes does a home visit before an applicant is accepted. When the animal is ready to start its new life with you, we will schedule a surgery date for your new pet, if needed. You will then sign the contracts and pay the adoption donation.

~*~ You will be given the CMHS Pet Adoption Kit which includes your contract, pet care literature, certificate for a free physical and fecal exam, and an ID tag for your new pet.

~*~ We are a great pet resource center. Please call if you have any questions or problems.

~*~ Please remember, you are making a lifetime commitment.

Thank You!
