Who We Are
The Joplin Humane Society is a non-profit organization
whose goal is to help protect the welfare of animals. We pursue this goal
through educational programs to teach children and adults how to be responsible
pet owners, as well as caring for many lost and abandoned pets, and by providing
many new homes through adoptions.
We also aid local and state law
enforcement officials in animal cruelty investigations. We serve Jasper and
Newton Counties and many of the communities within them, including Joplin, Alba,
Carterville, Duenweg, Webb City, Saginaw, Carl Junction, Neosho, and Republic.

There are always a variety
of animals available for adoption at the Humane Society. See our pet list link
at the top of the page. Pets can be adopted for a fee of $60, of which $35 goes
for the spaying/neutering of each animal. All pets have had their
first vaccinations and deworming. Mandatory state law requires spaying or
neutering of all animals adopted from the humane society. Area
veterinarians have agreed to provide free physical exams within 48 hours of
adoption to ensure adoptees are healthy.
How You Can Help
There are many ways volunteers may help the Humane Society's efforts,
including shelter maintenance and cleaning, office work, fundraising projects,
time spent with animals, and more. If interested, please call the shelter at
623-3642. Foster families are also needed! Please contact the shelter at
417-623-3642 if you, or someone you know is interested in helping us with this.

The Joplin Humane Society was incorporated in 1948 as a non-for-profit organization taking on the responsibility of helping animals. In 1956, a stucco building with inside pens and a large cattery was purchased. This building is standing near the Pet Cemetery that the Humane Society oversees behind the VFW Hall on Main Street. As the animal population grew, so did the need for a larger shelter. The Society obtained the land and moved the shelter to Swede Lane in 1966, where it stands today.
