AMERICAN STAGHOUND
We began rescuing American Staghounds in 2006 and will continue through 2008. Watch our listings for new additions. The American staghound is a mix of Irish wolfhound, greyhound and Scottish deerhound. The rare combination of these breeds results in gentle, loyal, attentive, affectionate and highly intelligent companions. They are much less rambunctious than purebred greyhounds. This cross was created to hunt predators and for competitive coursing involving everything from jackrabbits to wolves. They are still used extensively in the west to control coyote and wolf damage to sheep and cattle on the open range. As a result of having been used for hunting in packs they are naturally very well socialized with other dogs.
In the individual bios we list the breeds the dogs resemble most even though they're 3-way crosses. American staghounds are now being used as assistance and therapy dogs, particularly with children because of their gentleness, attentiveness and absolute devotion. They continue to grow through 2 years of age and fill out after that. The coarse and medium coats keep growing as they mature. This is a sighthound that will obey commands and won't wander as far when in pursuit. In the house they're couch potatoes. They're easily leash trained and non-pullers. We recommend a high (6 feet) fenced yard. Although initially shy they warm up quickly and are very quiet. If you're looking for a fabulous companion this is your dog.

American Staghound (F)
All puppies have received (minimally) their first set of shots & been dewormed. Adopters must spay/neuter at 6 months of age, in accordance with our adoption contract, at adopters' expense. No deposit required for spay/neuter; proof must be returned to the Shelter after surgery has been done (posted photocopy of Veterinary receipt). No application fees taken.
Dogs 6 months of age or older (Giant breeds at 7 or 8 months of age) are Vet examined, spayed or neutered, updated on their shots, wormed & treated for external parasites (seasonal concern) prior to being offered for adoption at the Shelter's expense. Dental exams, cleanings or extractions & other needed medical tests or procedures (ie. blood-chemistry analysis, heartworm check, heartworm or Lymes Disease treatment, umbilical hernia surgery, etc.) are also performed for PCGAS pets, as needed, prior to placement. Guardian Angel dogs are fortunate to benefit from the services of three local Veterinarians, whose combined small animal practice experience totals more than 50 years. In addition, Shelter staff is well-versed in nutritional therapies, as well as rehabilitation training, for pets who have suffered neglect, abuse, or even food allergies. Finally, PCGAS pets are blessed by the services of a professional groomer with 20+ years of experience grooming dogs for the show ring.

Pine County Guardian Angel Shelter is a licensed & inspected Minnesota Non-profit, No-Kill canine rescue facility (MN Board of Animal Health License #41013). Our mission is best summarized in the Shelter name: we recognize that every dog comes into this life to be a guardian angel for someone or some family - it's our purpose to help them find the correct home. All placements, therefore, are made with an underlying preference for what we perceive would be in the best interest of each dog.
Guardian Angel focuses its efforts on Rescue, Rehabilitation and Community Outreach/Education - especially in the vital area of emphasizing the importance of spay/neuter for companion animal population control, & improving the quality of life for our pets. Because of our large available space (big pens), our staff's expertise, & the limited resources of many communities' impounds & shelters, we particularly direct our energies to the rescue, rehabilitation (when needed) & placement of several Giant breeds & Hounds (specifically: Great Pyrenees, Greyhounds, Anatolian Shepherd, Irish Wolfhound, Scottish Deerhound, Afghan Hound, Bloodhound, & Alaskan Malamute), & most Herding breeds, specifically: German Shepherd; Collies, (rough, smooth or bearded); Blue or Red Heelers; Australian Shepherds; Welsh Corgis (Cardigan or Pembroke); Shetland Sheepdogs; &, Old English Sheepdogs). We also hold a particular reverence & love for Lhasas (Lhasa Apso - either purebreds or mixes.)
Since incorporation, Guardian Angel has rescued more than 4,500 companion animals, with a 97% success rate (calculated 1 year after placement).
Outdoor play groupings have been shown in research to result in fewer post-adoption problems, and quicker adjustment times for dogs after adoption. We believe this is a major factor in our very high success rate (low return rate) in adoptions. Another factor is accurately matching dogs with prospective homes: probably due to only 2 staff members handling all of the adoptions. Both of these staff members are on-site 365 days a year working directly with the dogs.
OPERATING HOURS:
ADOPTION DAYS: Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 5:00 by appointment only. A phone interview is required before an adoption appointment can be scheduled.
INTAKES/SURRENDERS must be scheduled in advance, and preferably not on a Friday or Saturday.
EMERGENCY CALLS, including lost and found, are accepted 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you leave a message on the machine, please be succinct, & repeat your phone number twice, & clearly. If you called during open hours & do not receive a call back within 2 hours, we did not get the message - please call again. (Note: voltage surges due to the neighboring dairy farms frequently result in the erasure of our answering machine - PLEASE call again if you do Not receive a quick return call. If you have left a message after shelter hours, & it is Not an emergency, expect a call-back when next we open.)
We do not schedule intakes or adoptions on Christmas Day.
