Who We Are!

Beltrami Humane Society is a NO-KILL 501(c)(3) Non profit agency comprised of many dedicated volunteers and staff who care for homeless, stray, and abandoned dogs and cats in Northern Minnesota. We continually strive to be among the leading humane society in the Northern part of the state, with outreach programs on two Native American reservations in our area, helping to feed, shelter and rescue stray, abused or abandoned dogs. Beltrami Humane Society rescues dogs and cats from local municipal animal impounds when their time is up, rehabilitates them if needed, and finds them new homes! We take in stray and abandoned animals off the street, as well as take in personal pets whose owners are no longer able to care for them. We work hard to find loving homes for every adoptable animal! If you have room in your family for a loving pet, take a look at our pets listed on Petfinder.com, on our website at www.beltramihumane.com, or please feel free to come visit us at the Shelter!

Needed Supplies:

The shelter is currently in DESPERATE NEED OF KITTEN & PUPPY FOOD, AND DRY CAT FOOD! We are always in need of litter, bleach, copy paper, paper towels, toilet paper, & dryer sheets. We are also in need of utility shelves and Rubbermaid-type linen closets to organize our warehouse. Consider donating today! It will warm your heart and help us to accomplish our goal to make the lives of these wonderful animals comfortable and safe until we find them their forever home. Beltrami Humane Society receives NO city, county, state, or government funding, or from any other organization, such as the Humane Society of the United States. Our shelter is run on the kind donations of community members, through fundraisers, and grants written by volunteers. We ask for your support today! We invite you to visit the shelter and find a new friend ~ whether it be feline, canine, or human!

Seeking Foster Parents

How Long Is A Lifetime?

Dogs and cats, with good care, can live to be 8-15 years old or older.
Before you take on the RESPONSIBILITY of adopting a pet, ask yourself these questions:

1.) How old will you be 15 years from now?
2.) How many times do you think you might move in the next 15 years?
3.) Are you willing to move the pet too, and restrict your choice of housing to places where pets are allowed?
4.) Will you change jobs? A new job that requires travel or long hours could mean extra boarding or pet sitting expenses.
5.) Will you have enough time each day to exercise your pet?
6.) What other major changes might happen in your life in the next 15 years? Marriage? Children?
7.) Are you willing to continue spending the time, energy, & money to care for your pet when taking on new responsibilities?
8.) Are you willing to re-train your pet so its behavior is acceptable to a new roommate, spouse, or child?
9.) If you are getting a pet for kids you have now, how old will they be in 15 years?
10.) Will you still want this pet after the kids move out?
11.) Have you previously owned a pet you didn't keep for at least 10 years? If so, what happened to it?
12.) What will you do to ensure a new pet has a home for life?

Adopting A Companion

Please come to the shelter between 12:30 and 5:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday to view animals for adoption. If you cannot visit us during our hours of operation, please call as we are willing to set up off-hour appointments. If you see a pet on petfinder that you are interested in, PLEASE call before you drive- animals change on a daily basis and we do not want you to be disappointed that the pet you like has been adopted! Each animal has an adoption fee based on species, age and breed. All dogs and cats MUST be spayed or neutered before they can leave our shelter.

Adoption Fees

Generally, adoption fees are from $75 for cats and $175 for dogs, depending on the pet you choose. Adoption fees INCLUDE spay/neuter, basic kennel vaccinations, deworming, and a coupon for a free rabies vaccination at a LOCAL vet clinic. All dogs and cats adopted from our facility MUST be spayed/neutered Before leaving our Shelter - NO EXCEPTIONS!! It takes but a few moments to fill out the adoption papers... and you will receive a lifetime of love in return!
