NEWS: Our 7th annual dogwalk is scheduled for September 10, 2011 and again at Barsness Park. Pledge brochures may be picked up at the Glacial Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Glenwood, Trumm Drug, the Library and the humane society shelter. The walk will start at 10 AM and lunch and milkbones will be served to the four-legged participants! We are hoping that "Buddy" aka Jake will make a guest appearance. As many of you know, Buddy had to have his leg amputated last December 2010. REALLY BIG NEWS: Was the opening of our thrift store located in Central Square on the 2nd floor. The Class Act Thrift Store, aka, CATS will be open on Saturdays starting May 2010. OLD, OLD NEWS: Many, many thanks to those who participated with us on the First Annual Dog Walk September 17, 2005 that started at Barsness Park in Glenwood and went along side of beautiful Lake Minnewaska. HISTORY: April 2004, we broke ground for our beautiful new animal shelter. Although we don't have official open hours, our available pets can be shown by appointment. We always need more volunteers to walk the dogs. A fundraiser book for the new shelter entitled: THE DOGS OF POPE COUNTY was created as a result of wonderful adoption information based on e-mail follow-ups on our canine pals in their forever homes, several copies are still available. Sales are going very well and we again thank those that have ordered and for their additional donation at the time of purchase. Contact mulvaney@tds.net if you would like to order a book. REALLY OLD NEWS: Spring 2000 we began P.E.T. (Pet Encounter Therapy) program and visited with our well-mannered dogs once a week at three Care Centers in Glenwood and to rave reviews we might add! This program became so popular that the area homes have had their very own resident/mascot dog. The PCHS still visits with the occasional batch of kittens and puppies to the delight of the residents. We have participated in National Pet Week by bringing dogs to the elementary school and talking to the children about responsible pet ownership. We have also participated in the Summer Reading Program for Children at the Glenwood Library by bringing several pets and having a question and answer session afterwards. The humane society even participated in the fundraising walk for Alzheimer's research. Several dogs were appropriately attired in the Alzheimer fundraising T-shirts! GOALS: We hope that many more volunteers will continue to come forward and help us at the shelter and to help realize our dream for Pope County's abandoned dogs and cats. We welcome donations of any kind such as kitty litter, cat and dog food. More than ever, we need the support of the community as well as all of the townships within the county.
