We are always looking for volunteers who love animals. Volunteers would initially clean cages, litter boxes, the floor, etc. and feed & water. As these become routine, other responsibilities such as medicating animals may be added. There are also secretarial and other clerical duties for volunteers. We even have need of a good "handyman" for odds and ends in repairs and contruction. There are many more volunteer needs as well. Please visit www.windmillanimalrescue.com for a more complete listing.

WHO WE ARE
WINDMILL ANIMAL RESCUE
In 1990, some children in the town of New Market, MN, brought a stray mother cat and her kittens to the local feed/pet store to be cared for.
That was the beginning.
As the years went by, more animals were brought in. They included orphans, strays, and lost domestic animals, some injured. Even local wildlife, such as orphaned raccoon kits, young squirrels that had fallen from their nests, robins, blue jays, even hawks and owls in need of medical attention, food, or a place to recover were brought in.
Toni Maat, owner of Windmill Feed & Pet, turned this impromptu concept into a non-profit rescue organization. In December of 2003, Windmill Animal Rescue was formed.
Windmill Animal Rescue's goal is to help all types of animals in need, as resources allow. Wild animals are placed with licensed rehabilitators for care or released back into their natural habitat. Domestic pets (such as cats, dogs, hamsters, etc.) are cared for by Windmill Animal Rescue. Windmill Animal Rescue works with several veterinarians in the area to supply proper medical care for these creatures.
All cats are feline leukemia and FIV tested, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed and treated medically as needed and housed at the shop until suitable homes arise. Dogs are usually kept in foster homes until owners are located or new families are found. Hamsters, ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, rats, goldfish, frogs, turtles, pigeons, parakeets, finches, cockatiels and canaries are some of the animals that have found a safe haven at Windmill while awaiting new families.
Many animals safe to do so are allowed to roam freely about the shop and interact with customers and other critters. You may find a ferret playing with the cats, a kitten chasing a dog's wagging tail, or a bunny hopping up and sniff your shoes and pulling at your shoelaces.
The non-profit shelter is located in New Market, MN, just 30 minutes south of downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul. There are more than 70 cats living at the shelter that need good homes. The shelter also needs foster homes, donations, and volunteers to help clean the facility and take care of the cats. The shelter is housed in and supported by Windmill Feed and Supply Company where all pet supplies can be purchased.

ADOPTION INFORMATION
To adopt an animal* you must complete these steps:
1. Fill out the three page Pre-Adoption Form for a dog or cat, one page for smaller animals. You can do this by e-mail.
2. Wait for approval from at least three Board Members.
3. Select your pet before, after, or during the first two steps.
4. Obtain all necessary supplies for your new when you pick up your new pet (or before).
5. Complete the Final Adoption Form before leaving the Windmill Animal Rescue with your new forever friend.
6. Pay the necessary adoption fee after approval and before leaving with your pet.
Because of the shelter circumstances, the cats are indoor/outdoor kitties. It is preferred, but not required, that they spend their lives as indoor, non-declawed cats (some cats arrive already declawed). These pets need a forever home with lots of love and attention.
*The adoption policy is applicable in full for the adoption of dogs or cats. Some of the adoption requirements may be waived for other animal adoptions based upon the needs and longevity of the animal and upon the discretion of the shelter manager or director.
We highly recommend visiting our shelter and getting to know the animals before selecting one!
