Ridgewater Paws and Claws is part of the Veterinary Technology Program located on the Willmar campus of Ridgewater College. Every September and January, the program takes in dogs and cats from the local humane society and dog pound. Because we are regulated by USDA, we are unable to take in any animals from other sources. During the fall semesters, the program also is home to many pocket pets and exotics that are also available for adoption at the end of the semester. Many of the animals we take in have special, treatable, medical needs that could not otherwise be provided.

Before the animals leave here, they receive the following:

Dogs:

- Evaluated for temperament
- Started on a training regiment using operant conditioning, a.k.a. clicker training
- Heartworm tested and on preventative
- Treated for heartworm if positive
- Fecal tested, treated if needed
- Spayed or Neutered
- Microchipped
- Vaccinated for: Rabies, Distemper (DHLPP), Lymes & Bordetella (kennel cough)
- Given any other medical attention they may need
(dentistry, x-rays, lump/bump removal & any other surgery needed)

Cats:

- Evaluated for temperament
- Feline Leukemia tested
- FIV tested
- Heartworm tested
- Fecal tested, treated if needed
- Spayed or Neutered
- Microchipped
- Vaccinated for: Rabies, Distemper (FVRCP) & Feline Leukemia
- Given any other medical attention they may need
(dentristry, x- rays, lump/bump removal & any other surgery needed)

The Veterinary Technology Program is a two year program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association that educates individuals to work with a veterinarian as a critical part of the veterinary medical team. Students are challenged with knowledge as well as technical and critical thinking skills that will enable them to be successful in their careers. The animals play an essential role in the learning process.
