The stench of garbage, urine and feces is unbearable. Ammonia hangs heavy in the air and flies are everywhere.
Dim lighting and the constant barking of dogs in distress create a sense of chaos.
Row upon row of stacked cages hold dogs matted with feces - some too sick to move. This is the world of a puppy mill dog.
While a growing number of people are aware of puppy mills, few understand the horrors of the industry.
Detailed reports from our experts offer a greater insight into the notorious puppy mill trade. Puppy Mill FAQ
New Rescue Affiliate
Peke N Chin Midwest welcomes Shana Knuckles and Wyoming Small Dog Rescue as a western affiliate. Shana adopted dogs from us and expressed an interest in fostering as well. We wanted a way to let Wyoming residents recognize that small rescue dogs could be found locally. Because most search engines go by zip code, and our zip code is Minnesota, potential adopters from other states could not be reached. Shana is pursuing recognition by Petfinder as a rescue based in Wyoming, but as part of the PNC group. The rescue will be following our vetting and adoption guidelines. We welcome this affiliation and hope to expand our rescue and re-homing efforts wherever it is needed.
News
We are seeing more owner-surrendered dogs because people can no longer care for them. I thank these people for making the first move to help their dogs on to a new live with a loving family by bringing them to us.
The assistance in providing the necessary medical treatments for many of these dogs come from our adoption fees and donations from generous donors. We are now using more of our rescue dollars on the long-term care of our Forever Fosters – we have made a commitment to them that we intend to keep. They will finish their lives in warm loving homes with caring people.
Pet Surrendering:
Behavior problems account for the leading cause of owner relinquishment of pets and resulting euthanasia - we all know it and numerous studies confirm it. Often pet parents just need some help in dealing with the issues they are facing.
Petvideo.com, created by the founders of Petfinder.com and Petsincredible, provides free online training clips. We encourage our visitors and adopters to visit this site to view the same positive, reward-based training advice featured on the award winning PetsIncredible DVDs – TRAINING YOUR ADOPTED DOG and YOUR ADOPTED CAT.
Our History
Peke N Chin Midwest was founded after a need was realized here in the State of Minnesota and surrounding states. This was discovered by accident. Heidi Ludwig was attending a dog auction in Wheaton, Missouri in hopes of rescuing some Japanese Chins and getting them out of the cycle of puppy mill abuse for a National Japanese Chin rescue group.
The Chins never showed up; however, a friend that she met there told her that there were some old Pekes that someone had put into the auction. The lone male, renamed Merlin, came with Heidi to MN. She had the intention of turning him over to Pekingese Rescue. Well, to her surprise she realized when she got home that there is no Peke rescue in Minnesota.
Merlin went on to get completely vetted and placed in a loving home with two people who absolutely worship him. Regi Goodhall was introduced to Heidi when she offered to foster a local Peke until a forever home could be found. An adoption was pending but Heidi had also called and the two got together.
Since this time, both Regi and Heidi have applied for and become associated with the Pekingese Club of America and their rescue program. Both Pekingese Club of America and Peke N Chin Midwest are non-profit organizations. Donations are accepted and very much appreciated.
All adoption donations go to helping to cover medical expenses for our rescued friends.
Due to the success and expansion of Peke N Chin Midwest our rescue efforts takes us all over the midwest area. We have volunteers located in the State of Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Montana and the Province of Manitoba in Canada.
Co-Founder Regi Goodhall: Regi Goodhall is a co-founder of PNC and currently holds the position as Treasurer. Her current “pack” includes one husband (very supportive), an 11 year old Pomeranian mix (Tootsie - the boss), an 11 year old vision impaired but very sweet Pekingese (Cashew Cassie), a 10 year old Japanese Chin/Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix (Petie), a 10 year old retired Pekingese breeder with a heart condition (Noni), a 7 year old blind Pekingese (Tawny), a 5 year old extremely timid Pekingese (Eliza), and a 4 year old black Pekingese (Tuxedo) who's a big boy at 17 lbs.
A separate line is needed for Meko, a 4 year old Snowshoe/Siamese cat who tolerates all this dog nonsense with great dignity.
Adopting a Friend
The purpose of our rescue is to find good permanent "forever" homes for each of the dogs entrusted to us. That means an extensive screening to insure a good match between a dog and their adopter.
We send out an adoption application to find out more about you, your situation, and your expectations. Hopefully you'll be a good match for the dog you are interested in. We check with your vet to confirm your desire to keep your pet healthy and your environment safe with preventive care in the form of vaccinations. A home visit helps check out any unexpected circumstances that might interfere with a good match. A donation from you is used to pay for medical expenses for current and future dogs. We are a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. Finally we have you sign an adoption contract. If all has gone well, we work with you to get you and your new pet together.
If, after all our efforts and yours, an adoption doesn't work out we ask that the dog be returned to us and we confirm that we will take the dog back providing a cushion for both. We want successful adoptions!
Senior Dogs: Have you given thought to adopting an older or senior dog? These friends need you so much more than you can imagine.
They come to you trained, past the puppy chewing stage, past so many other stages, and are so very grateful for the love you share with them.
Please visit The Senior Dogs Project to learn how rewarding it is to bring a senior dog into your life.
They deserve a family - no matter their age.
