Who We Are

The Great Lakes Zoological Society’s World of Discovery Conservation & Rescue Center is a family destination featuring reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and birds.

The mission of the Great Lakes Zoological Society (GLZS) is to promote conservation, the importance of a balanced ecosystem, and how to coexist with wildlife; as well as serving as a rescue and recovery center for homeless, neglected, and unwanted reptiles.

The World of Discovery is located on the west side of Ann Arbor on Jackson Rd west of Zeeb Rd. (6885 Jackson Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103).

Rehoming of Reptile Pets

A serious problem that exists in the pet trade is the sale of exotic reptiles that later end up unwanted or neglected.  At the World of Discovery, these animals are rehabilitated and prepared for placement within appropriate homes or facilities with properly trained caregivers, whenever possible. Some reptiles and amphibians find a permanent home in our exhibit area for education.

Native Rescue & Release Program

The GLZS has built a partnership with the Michigan DNR to serve as a rescue for injured and confiscated reptiles and amphibians.  After rehabilitation and with the DNR’s assistance, these animals are either released to the wild or maintained at the World of Discovery if they are not able to survive in the wild or it is inappropriate to release them.

Education

Education is our primary program at the World of Discovery.  School children participate in an age appropriate tailored interpretive educational presentation in our classroom.  Focused on science, but crossing disciplines, the program covers reptile and amphibian natural history, conservation, geography, skin, diet, habitat, movement, predation, and many other fascinating topics.  The children get to make observations and hypotheses while getting to see and touch reptiles up close.  In the exhibit area, the children participate in an age appropriate scavenger hunt.
