Who We Are
Animal Rescue Project is a non-profit, no-kill dog and cat rescue group with a full-service shelter in Kalamazoo / Portage but serving all of Southwest Michigan. We have more than 150 volunteers, many with years of experience in animal rescue. The well-being of rescued pets is our only priority. You can read more about us on our website About page.
What We Do
Most of our rescue pets come from public pound facilities, where they had little chance of survival. At any given time, we have between 75 and 100 dogs and puppies and between 60 and 80 cats and kittens in our care. Most are housed at our shelter, but we also have a large and active network of foster homes. Our shelter features large and spacious kennels for dogs, and cats and kittens enjoy free-range rooms customized to their needs. Outdoors, the shelter is surrounded by five large play yards for dogs and puppies.
We provide high-quality veterinary care, from routine checks and treatment to extensive care for animals with injuries or serious conditions. If pets are old enough, we spay or neuter them before adoption. For those that are too young, we have a post-adoption spay and neuter program through a local vet network and a reimbursement program for those who adopt from outside the immediate area.
We evaluate the temperaments of our rescue dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies to find good matches for them. When they're ready to be adopted, we publish their profiles on Petfinder.
Our Adoption Process
After you've decided which pet you're interested in, we ask you to fill out an adoption application form. The application helps us determine whether there will be a good match between you and the pet that interests you.
We may also talk to you to find out more about the type of pet that would fit with your lifestyle.
If it looks like a good match and you'd like to adopt, you complete an adoption contract and pay the adoption service fee, we give you the pet's medical records and other information, and you take home your new family member.
