Bear Creek Refuge
HELPING THE HELPLESS, LOVING THE LOST
Bear Creek refuge, initially a family home and wildlife refuge, has also become a refuge for pets in need for over 30 years. Our pets are rescued from the streets, from kind people who have assisted them, and those relinquished by their families who can no longer care for them. Pets are given immediate (and sometimes extensive) as well as routine veterinary care; are loved and cared for until they can be placed in the right home.
Since Bear Creek Refuge is the home of a retired couple, donations are needed at the time of adoption to help with veterinary expenses. Additional donations are always needed to help with pet food, sheltering costs, and veterinary care to treat routine needs and extras for the animals. In addition to monetary donations the following are always needed: pet food, blankets, quilts, towels, sheets, rugs, crates, kennels and fencing.
It is our policy not to adopt on the day of an adoption event, but to review all applications to find the right match. We match pets with people. All pets go out on trial basis and must be returned to Bear Creek Refuge if not kept by the adoptive family. WE CARE ABOUT THEIR FUTURE. We are available to help with adjustment problems and training.
Due to the economy, the abundance of homeless pets of homeless people has drastically increased and our food donations have drastically decreased. Therefore we have no choice but to limit the number of incoming pets to the number of outgoing pets. We will not take in more than we can properly care for. Currently we have several pets waiting to come in as others are adopted.
We will place within approximately 50 miles of the greater Kalamazoo area. We do home visits with the pets to ensure compatibility. We require a fenced yard for most dogs to ensure their safety.
