Our Featured Pet: Martha

Click here to see Martha's profile

Martha is a senior cat that came to us after her owner passed away. Martha has been with us since the start of our rescue (over a year and a half!) and is the only one of the seven cats that has not found a home. Unfortunately, we just learned that Martha has some medical issues that will require extra care, including a special diet, which is not cheap.

Please consider a donation to help offset our expenses.

Thank you.

Adopting a New Friend
You can adopt from us in three easy steps:

1. Take a look at all the animals we have for adoption. Click here to see who needs a home

2. Fill out an application for the animal you wish to adopt. Click here to download an application

3. We will get back to you within 24 hours to set up a time for you to meet the animal, usually either at your home or an event (we do not have a shelter). If the meeting goes well, an adoption contract will need to be signed and adoption fee paid.

Our adoption fees are $90 per cat, or $150 for a pair. Exotic or purebred cats (i.e. pointed siamese, persian, himalayan) are $125. Except in special cases, ALL adopted animals are spayed or neutered before they are adopted out. This is in adherence with our drive to control the pet population, plus it saves adopters the time, money and inconvenience of going to the vet.

Fostering Until A New Home is Found
If you can keep the pet temporarily, consider joining our group as a temporary foster home, and continue to keep the animal until we can help find a new home.

Placement into One of Our Foster Homes
We do not have a shelter. Our foster homes are often full or above capacity. Animals that are up-to-date on shots (rabies, distemper), are fixed, and are negative for feline leukemia/FIV will have a much HIGHER chance of getting placed within temporary foster care.

If we are able to take in your pet, we require a donation for each cat surrendered. The amount required is dependent on the amount of vetwork that will need to be done

Controlling the Pet Population
Because of the high number of homeless pets, we highly encourage and promote spaying or neutering your pet. Why? Because as many as 8-10 million homeless animals are put to sleep each year.

Theoretically, each unplanned birth means one more cat will likely die.

How can YOU help US?

Our dedicated volunteers work very hard for these animals, and pay for food, litter, and gas out of their own pockets. We rely on monetary and material donations to help keep costs down. Any monetary donations go 100% towards the animals. Any donated items we receive will bs used, or passed along to another rescue.
Here are just some of the things that we can always use:

1. Cat litter, cat food, toys

2. Money/gift cards to pet stores (Petco, PetSmart, Pet Supplies Plus) or general retailers (Meijer, Kmart, Target). Gas cards are great too, as we often transport animals long distances to events, vets, and their new homes.

3. Exposure - spread the word about us! If you know anyone who is interested in adopting an animal, please pass along our information.

4. Blankets, towels, pillows or other soft items for pets to lay on. Even if they are used, our animals appreciate them much more than a hard surface.

5. Crates or cages. We are limited on the number of fosters we can foster and show at events based on the number of cages we have.
Who We Are
House of Critters Animal Rescue was formed in May 2007 with the mission of helping find homeless animals a new, safe, and healthy home. Our volunteers have many years of experience with pets, both through personal ownership, and through rescue work. It is our passion to assist those who are abandoned, abused, injured or are in dire circumstances that drives us to fight for those that cannot speak for or help themselves.

House of Critters strongly believes in controlling the pet population, and supports spaying and neutering. We also believe in responsible pet ownership, and assist and educate pet owners by offering assistance when we can to help remedy problems, including advice on behavioral and medical issues.

We are not-for-profit, and our plan is to apply for 501(c)3 non-profit status once we receive funding. We are currently raising funds to initiate the process in October 2008. Our main goal currently is to simply find homes for those who cannot help themselves.

We currently do not have a shelter, instead utilizing a small number of foster homes. Although we are doing our best to help save as many animals as is feasible, we are limited in the number of animals we can save. The more foster homes we have, the more we can save. If you are interested in volunteering or fostering for us, please send an email to: houseofcrittersmichigan@yahoo.com

In Memory: Those that are no longer with us
This site is dedicated to our own personal pets that have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge:

Patti - rescued at 4 weeks old along with her 4 littermates after her mom abandoned them. She was a loving cat that would curl up on your wrist and talk to you.

Casey - a rescued stray that defied the odds, and refused to give up.

Colby - a unique siamese mix rescued from a bad situation. He brought much happiness to his owner, who had these words to say about his good buddy:
"At the end Colby could hardly move but he still tried to get up and come to the door the greet me when I came home, although he could only make it to the end of the couch. I tried to make him as comfortable as possible by making a bed for him on the couch upstairs and putting his food and water next to him."

We are all saddened by each of these losses, and will miss each of them dearly.
