Who We Are
We opened Laki's Home bird shelter and rescue when we were made aware of the growing need for a bird rescue in south east Michigan. Currently we are still working out of our home, but in the very near future we will need to move to some place a tad bit larger.
Almost immediately after opening our doors, hearts, and wallets, did the birds start flying in.
We always have something going on here. And new birds coming in. Lots of them are adoptable, And if one comes in that is not, don't fret, perhaps down the road they will be.
Just try to be patient ( I know easier said than done!).
Our Mission:
We are a private funded non-profit organization that rescues abused and unwanted birds.
Our foster home(s) provide a safe haven for abandoned, abused and unwanted birds.
We are a no-kill shelter.
Educating the public on the responsibilities of bird ownership
is one of the primary goals of L.H.B.R.S.
We hope to educate both current bird owners and future bird owners alike.
We strive to keep in touch with other shelters and rescues,
in the hope to offer a broad base support network for you.
This allows us to assist with almost any issue that may arise that you need help with.
We hope to find forever loving homes for all the birds that we rescue.
And to provide a peaceful sanctuary for those birds that are unable to be adopted.
Adopting a friend
We try to make this as easy and painless as possible. However, these are still important steps that we must take, not only for your benefit but for these precious animals as well. So please be patient and the entire process should not take too long! Adoption Application

If you are approved we will call and set up a phone interview with you. You can choose to print out the application and mail it to us, or you can email it as well.

Step Two
Phone Interview
This interview is nothing formal just a casual conversation. This is a great time to ask any questions that you may have. We are looking for individuals who are truly committed to adopting there new companion. Adoption fees will be discussed at this point.
Live Interview and meeting your new companion
This is the fun part! Just kidding! We discuss the responsibilities of bird ownership and the amount of time that it truly takes. We provide you with a wealth of information to make this transition easier. Including is a list of local avian vets that we recommend. You also get to meet your future companion! We will show you proper handling, and other ways to enjoy your new companion. We will explain basic bird care and what to expect. This is when you pay the adoption fee. Accepted forms of payment are: money order, cashier check, and cash. We will provide you a receipt.
Taking your new companion home
This is the most fun and well tearful days. After so much time is spent with your new bird, We find it hard to let them go! They are just like our babies. If the bird comes with a cage you will need to bring a vehicle large enough with you. Also a carrier will also be needed to safely transfer the bird to his new home.
Follow Up
We will call you in a week to see how things are going. This is a great time to ask any new questions and by all means share any funny stories. Follow ups are not limited to calls but may also include home visits if we feel they are necessary. Proper advance notice will be given if a home visit is necessary.
