Kalamazoo County Animal Services & Enforcement is the only stray animal shelter in Kalamazoo County. Hundreds of lost, abandoned, unwanted and seized animals come to our shelter each year. While those animals are here, we feed and care for them until they are claimed by their owners, a new family, a rescue group, or until we can no longer keep the animal in our facility.

All stray animals are given 7 days to be reclaimed by an owner. After 7 days the animal may be adopted, rescued or euthanized. Once the animal has left the property with a new family or a rescue, the original owner will not be able to reclaim it even with proof of ownership. Because of this, its important that owners actively search for their animals if they want it returned home.

Animal Services also takes found reports from people who are hanging on to stray dogs, and we also pick up DOA domestic animals that have been deceased less than 24 hours. Those animals are not listed on Pet Finder. Please call and inquire.

If you are missing your pet:

  • Come into the Animal Services Shelter at least once a week
  • Contact local Rescues, Shelters and Humane Societies
  • Check the Kalamazoo Gazette for Found Animal Listings
  • Put up signs in your area, and let neighbors be aware so they can keep an eye out for you too

If you find your lost pet at the shelter:

  • There will be fees to 'bail out' your pet, please contact the shelter for specifics
  • You will need to provide proof of ownership such as pictures, vet records or other documentation that you own the animal you are claiming.
  • You will need to bring your drivers license or picture ID

Not all of the animals we care for are available for adoption. The shelter cares for every friendly, sick, injured, aggressive animal that comes into our facility. Our staff will be able to tell you if that animal is available for adoption or not.

If you want to adopt:

  • Dogs cost $67.00 plus neutering fees, Cats cost $82.00 for males or $92.00 for females which includes neutering fees, other animals fees vary, please call our office
  • Come into the shelter and handle the animals you're interested in
  • You will need to bring your drivers license or picture ID and there is an adoption application to be filled out
  • If you are coming from more than 1 county's distance away, please call us to make arrangements for viewing/adopting the animal
