'Tis the season for Kennel Cough again and Al-Van Humane Society is amoung the many shelters currently struggling with this virus.
(similiar to a cold in people.)
Kennel Cough can be very contagious between dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog from here, you will be required to make a vet appt before taking the dog/puppy home. Please make sure your dogs are up to date on thier vaccines including the BORDETELLA Vaccine. If your dog was to get away from you and have to be lodged in an animal care facility, he could contract this virus!

Adopting a friend

Please understand...

The completion of an adoption application does NOT guarantee you will receive the animal for which you applied.
Each adoption decision is made based on the individual needs of each animal.

Here at Al-Van Humane Society we do NOT ship our puppies,
nor do we adopt to families more than a 60 mile radius of our shelter without an excellent vet reference.
There are too many wonderful mixed breeds in a shelter near you.

We require approximately one day to screen applications.

We do not return long distance phone calls. We try to answer emails every couple hours during the day.

Before you begin your search at our shelter,
please keep in mind these few important facts:

Al-Van Humane Society can not make any guarantees about temperment, size, shedding, or even breed. If you need such guarantees, please consider breed rescue.
Most, if not all, of the pets featured here came to us as strays, or from unwanted litters. This means they received very little care, if any at all, before coming here. This fact in combination with our shelter not having an on staff Veterinarian, Al-Van Humane Society can NOT guarantee the health of any of our "MarvelousMutts". If you are interested in adopting from here, contact your vet, discuss with him / her the risks involved with adopting a pet with such a sad history.

Medicals provided by Al-Van before adoption:
Every pet that enters into our shelter is started on the road to a healthy future with 1 parvo/distemper, bordetella, and a basic worming.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

To ensure happy, healthy, lifetime adoptions, please provide us with the full name/s of all adults living in the home, address, phone #, county, vet phone #, children's ages, and what you want/need from the pet you are considering.
Please just insert this information into a regular email. We do not have an actual downloadable application.

Please be advised, if you wish to offer lifetime happiness to one of our pets, we do require proof of residency. Renters need to provide our shelter with a copy of your pet policy. Homeowners, proof of ownership.

If you are adopting a pet 3 months of age or older you will need a collar and a leash.

Puppies younger than 6 months: $90 adoption fee, $30 of that $90 is refunded once we recieve proof of sterilization.
**Out of county adopters will be required to pay a $50 refundable spay / neuter deposit.** ** Out of state adopters a $100 deposit.**
Dogs 6 months and older, $110.00 adoption fee which includes microchip, rabies vacc and, of course, they are spayed and neutered..

Cats & kittens: $50 for cats, includes spay/neuter. Kittens are $40 and you will get $25 of the $40 back once you get them fixed by the vet of your choice. Please call the shelter if you have any questions.

Toddlers & Puppies

Al-Van Humane Society is amoung the many shelters and rescues that are very concerned about toddler/puppy adoptions. Statictis show it usually doesn't work out.

Things to consider before bringing a puppy into your toddlers home...

*Puppies are puppies, they jump and scratch. Toddlers are toddlers, they pull tails and ears and want to "investigate" the puppy. (Puppies do NOT like to be investigated!)
*Puppies will have "accidents" on the same carpet your toddler will play on.
*Puppies will chew toddler's toys... and toddlers will chew puppy's toys.
*Puppies will take treats from people of his own height, and toddlers will eat from a bowl that can be reached.
*Seperating puppy from toddler will cause puppy to become uptight and unhappy due to lack of attention and exercise.
Pets are a truly wonderful addition to a family. But if the time isnt right, no one will be happy.

If you can not support a pet in your home, support your local shelter!

Shelter Worker's Credo

As animal shelter personnel with various duties and responsibilities, we hereby
make the following promises and declarations:

We hereby promise to love and to care for the pets brought into our shelter to the best of our ability.

We promise to make them as comfortable as possible in an impossible situation.

We promise to do our best to find them new homes.

When all else fails, we promise to end thier lives humanely
in order to make room for the endless supply of animals to follow.

HOWEVER

We also stand firm with the following:

We did not cause these animals to be born into this overpopulated world.

We did not cause these pets to become a problem or inconvenience to thier owners.

We did not cause thier owners to move, to have kids, to become allergic to them , or to become ill.

We will not accept, nor allow to be placed on us, the guilt that belongs to the owners of these pets.

IT IS NOT OUR FAULT!!
Spay and Neuter your pets!
