Volunteering:
We are always in need of loving foster homes, so we can help more Cocker Spaniels! We are also always in need of financial donations to support the medical expenses we incur to rescue our Cockers! These expenses can vary greatly depending upon the individual dog's condition. We are a 501c3 so all your donations are tax deductable! Thank you for your generosity in helping us help the dogs!
Who We Are
Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Mid-Michigan is
Sponsored by Mid-Michigan Cocker Spaniel Club of Lansing, Inc.
The Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Mid-Michigan has been established in memory of Thomas Gallant, a long time member of Mid-Michigan Cocker Spaniel Club. He, along with his wife Nancy, developed an outstanding breeding and showing program, which produced over 47 champion and obedience titled Cocker Spaniels.
Tom and Nancy have assisted "new-comers" to Cocker Spaniels, to grow in their own expertise, and to fully ascribe to the goals of MMCSC.
Tom was truly dedicated to the betterment of Cocker Spaniels. Through the Rescue program, his love of these little dogs can be shown by giving them a second chance at a happy tail wagging life!
Thank you for your interest in our rescue dogs. We think they are very special and hope you will, too.
Because many people are not familiar with "rescue", we would like to explain briefly what we do. Basically we find homes for Cocker Spaniels whose previous homes have disappeared. This may happen for a variety of reasons: an owner dies, a dog gets lost and picked up by a shelter, a family moves and is unwilling to take the dog along, people get divorced (or married) and move to different living arrangements, an owner's job starts to require a lot of travel, people have a baby and decide they can't handle a dog. If you are a dog person, you can't believe the reason that people give up a dog, but it happens all the time. Almost always it is absolutely no reflection on the dogs and how super they are. They just get lost in the shuffle.
Since Cocker Spaniel rescue in this area has been active, thanks to the donations made in memory of Tom Gallant, The Rescue of Mid-Michigan has made it one of their goals to help these Cocker Spaniels. We hear about Cocker Spaniels through various sources. We are notified by shelters, we are members of a United States American Spaniel Club Rescue that refers dogs in our area to us. Through groomers, breeders, or just through the "grapevine", we hear about dogs needing our help. Thankfully many Cocker Spaniels, in need of a home, have been placed with people who are willing to open their homes to a dog who is a bit down on his/her luck at the moment, and we end up with smiling faces at both ends of the leash.
Obviously, most of our dogs are beyond the puppy stage. And quite frankly, we are always amazed by the number of people who think they want a puppy, but after having lived with these older dogs during foster care, come to appreciate the many benefits of a mature dog. We also realize that puppies are made cute for a reason, to make you forget the shoes they ate, the plants they demolished, the messes they made, and all the times they drove you crazy!
All of our adoptive dogs have been spayed or neutered, unless there have been extenuating circumstances. We believe very strongly in not contributing to the serious problem of dog-over-population. Also our dogs are never released with "papers".
Before they are placed for adoption, all of our adoptive dogs will have received their rabies and DHLP-P inoculations. They will have been tested for heartworm and started on heartworm preventative. They will have had a fecal examination to detect and treat any internal parasites. Treatment will have begun or been completed on any known medical problem, such as an ear infection.
Due to the expenses of inoculations, veterinary care, and spaying or neutering, we would appreciate a donation toward these expenses which will run between $75. and $150..
Your adoptive dog will have to be groomed, on a regular basis, so you will have a dog who feels good about him/herself and is pleasant to have in the house with you.
We hope you will be one of those people who join with us in discovering a rescue dog!
