Who We Are
Compassion for Greyhounds goal is to find loving and compassionate homes for loving and compassionate greyhounds.
Compassion for Greyhounds Mission is to educate the public about the true Greyhound personality and to alleviate common misconceptions that many still have of this gentle, majestic breed; to find loving and qualified homes for Greyhounds; and to offer ongoing support to those who adopt Greyhounds.
Compassion for Greyhounds is registered with the State of Michigan and is a non-profit 501(c)3. We receive no compensation for our work other than the joy of seeing good people united with good dogs.
Adopting a friend
Compassion for Greyhounds is a greyhound adoption agency run entirely by volunteers willing to spend countless hours finding homes for retired racing greyhounds. And as much as we want to see every greyhound retired from racing adopted, we do not want to see these beautiful, elegant dogs placed in homes that are not appropriate for them.
For this reason, we do have an adoption process that we use to make sure that the greyhounds we place will be going to live in a home that is right for them. We don’t want the greyhound or the family to be unhappy with the adoption. Although many greyhounds have the same base personality, they are individuals. And as individuals, each of them will be different with their own requirements and personalities.
When you think about adopting a greyhound (or any dog, for that matter), the proper research should be done before making the commitment to adopt.
We require that one of the following two books be read before the adoption takes place: Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan and Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood. For families with children, we may also require that you read the following book: Childproofing Your Dog by Brian Kilcommon. These books can be found at most bookstores or purchased online through Amazon.com.
The Adoption Process
Application: An adoption application can be found online or you can contact us and we will send you one. Complete the application and submit it either online or by mail.
Application Review: We will review your application and an adoption counselor will contact you. We will answer any questions you may have. At this time, we may schedule a home visit at a time convenient to all.
Home Visit: During the home visit, the adoption counselors bring a greyhound or two to visit so that you and your family have the chance to interact with a greyhound in your own home. These visits are necessary so that you can see what it is like to have a greyhound in your home and it gives us the opportunity to talk with you one-on-one about the joys of adopting a retired racing greyhound.
Application Approval: If your application is approved, the adoption counselors will speak with you about what type of greyhound would do best in your home. We will talk with you about different personality types and what you are looking for in your new family member.
The Wait: The adoption process can take from 2 - 6 weeks. If we currently don’t have a greyhound that would be a match, we will have to wait until we get the right dog for you.
Please keep in mind that not all individuals or homes are right for a retired racing greyhound. Submitting an application to Compassion for Greyhounds is not a guarantee that you will be approved to adopt a greyhound.
Invisible/underground fencing is not an acceptable containment system for greyhounds!!!! Greyhounds can go from 0-45 miles/hr in 3 strides and invisible fencing will not hold them back, once they reach that speed.
