FEATURED DOG:

Sheba is a very loving girl who is a great walker. She loves to have her belly rubbed and to cuddle up with you and watch a little TV. She has been at the shelter a very long time because she is very good at jumping fences, especially if she can see you on the other side. Sheba would do great with a back yard that had a privacy fence, or with a family who loved to take nice long walks.

FEATURED CAT:

Autumn is a beautful tortie with a very quiet personality. She is a shy girl who does best with other shy cats and kittens. She looks for a quiet area to spend most of her day. Autumn will sit on your lap and loves to be brushed and petted. Like all of our animals Autumn is vaccinated, FeLuK/FIV negative and ready for a new home. If you would like to visit with Autumn please give us a call to set up an appointment.

FMAR is proud to feature a few of our adoptable pets at Petco in Canton on the second Saturday of each month and again in Westland on the third Saturday of each month.

2009 ... Special Updates:

Kids Write Songs to Help Rescued Animals! Lincoln Elementary School Bright Futures After School Program are donating proceeds from SALES OF Their ORIGINAL Songs to the Friends of Michigan Animals Rescue. The singing and musical talents of these elementary children are amazing. The CD's are selling for $5 but I am sure you will agree they are worth much much more. CD's are being offered on the FMAR website at: www.fmar1.org under the store section. Thank you so much for supporting the Bright Futures kids and the rescued animals of FMAR.

The barn that was donated to FMAR has moved to Arkona Road. That's right. It took us about a year to work out all of the details, but on Tuesday, April 28th, a 1200 square foot pole barn gingerly moved down Rawsonville Rd., south of I-94 in Belleville, to our shelter. It was about a 5 mile drive and we were escorted by Sumpter Police Department , as well as, the FMAR shelter van, cable and utility companies. Now that the barn is in place, the renovation into a cat shelter will begin! This will allow us to separate the cats from the dogs and give us more room to help more animals. Stay tuned as we update all of you on the renovations and finally our big open house.

We are going to need a lot of buiding supplies, so if you live in the Belleville area or know of a contractor that is willing to donate materials please contact the shelter via email at vb-petlover@comcast.net to discuss.

For more information on the barn and renovations to the shelter please visit our website at www.fmar1.org. Please stay tuned!

Volunteer update

FMAR Board of Directors, Linda Luke, Page McLaughlin, Cathy Boatin, Orsi Dezsi, Eileen Russel, Bob Smith, Marcy and Pete LaFramboise and especially all of the animals who come to stay until they find their new loving forever homes, would like to take this time to wish a very special thank-you to all of the FMAR dedicated volunteers. FMAR wouldn't be where we are today without your support, dedication and teamwork. Blessings to all of you.

Special Thanks!

Thank you to to everyone who drops off supplies to the shelter and who takes the time to support us. FMAR is still looking for dedicated volunteers to help with the morning and afternoon cleaning, walking and socializing of our pets. If you have a few hours a week to spare, you can work independently with training and you are dependable and willing to get dirty at a gratifying job that pays in love and devotion, please call Weezey at 734 516-1513 to set up a time to come out and visit.

FMAR is fortunate to have a wonderful, creative person, Kenn Sheats, working on the newsletter for us. We think you will be pleasantly surprised with the new format. If you would like to be on our newsletter mailing list or would like to view the newsletter on line, please visit our website at www.fmar1.org. Johnston Lithograph is printing the newsletter and our flyers for us and they are doing a fabulous job. Thank you so much to Keith Johnston and his team for their support and generous help with keeping the cost down for us.

Visting FMAR

Pete and Marcy love having visitors to see the animals and the shelter. They have 9 dog kennels and 5 adult cat enclosures with a new community cat area. We have continued to stay very full since the shelter was opened in 2003. FMAR is blessed to have several dedicated part time volunteers who help us keep the shelter clean and the animals fed. Marcy has a full time job that takes her away from the shelter approx. 11 hours a day leaving Pete to run the day to day shelter operations on his own. Pete and Marcy not only run the shelter business they live on the property as well. I am sure you all understand how difficult it is to fit in a few minutes of family time when you work full time outside of the home and you have a full time business to run. Pete and Marcy ask that you call 734 461-9458 to make sure someone is at the shelter before you come out to visit. Somewhere in their schedule they try to fit in dinner and conversation about the day's shelter activity. Because of their very busy schedule they have chosen not to take Sunday appointments and use Sunday to go to church, do household chores and, maybe fit some family time in. Your patience and understanding is appreciated. Thank you.

Volunteers needed

If you have 2 - 4 hours a week to give to a wonderful cause and are creative, hardworking and dependable, we would love to talk to you about joining our mission.

We have several openings, especially for morning kennel help and caring for the animals.

The hours would range from Monday - Saturday AM and PM (we can work something out fit to your schedule). FMAR is closed on Sunday for adoptions, but the animals still need to be cleaned, fed and loved. We would love to have a few dedicated volunteers on weekends to help take care of the animals. If you are interested in any of these volunteer oportunities and you are willing to commit at least 2-4 hours a week of your time to the care of the shelter animals, we would love to hear from you. Please call 734 461-9458 and leave a message or contact our volunteer coordinator (Weezey) direct at 734-516-1513.

Our promise is a rewarding opportunity to help animals and service the community and help FMAR grow and flourish.

FMAR is searching for energic, dedicated volunteer dog walkers to add to our program. You will be walking dogs of all sizes and shapes so will need to be an energetic dog lover and a person who loves to walk. If you like to come by and see if you might be interested in our volunteer dog walking program please give us a call at 734-461-9458 to set up an appointment to come to the shelter and learn more about our dog walking program. You can also send us an email through by visiting our website at www.fmar1.org. Thank you for your interest.

Who We Are

FMAR is a non-profit 501(c)3 rescue for dogs and cats that started in April 2003 with the help and support wonderful volunteers and supporters. We grew by leaps and bounds, so we bought a 61/2 acre farm and renovated the smaller of the 2 barns with 9 dog kennels and 5 unique cat kennels. In 2005 we added a community cat area to our facility where all of our adult cats can socialize with each other, find a favorite window, or climb in a basket to nap. We also have a community dog area where our dogs get exerci has allowed us to house a larger number of pets. Our mission is to protect animals and residents by promoting a healthy and safe enviornment for all. FMAR felt we needed to start in our own community helping our Animal Control facility find homes for the strays they pick up or are brought to them. When we have extra space we have done our best to help out neighboring communities too. We are amazed and saddened every day by the abundance of homeless pets and hope to raise enough money to renovate our larger barn very soon. Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged us to continue when things got tough. Keep watching the best is yet to come!!

Adopting a friend

FMAR is an all breed rescue, and like you, we are concerned about the welfare of the animals and the families that adopt them. We will require paperwork to be filled out and a consultation before an animal is adopted. Interaction with any other animals in your care is also required. We reserve the right to deny any adoption that we feel is not safe or comfortable for either the animal or potential adopter. Our adoption costs vary, and include first set of vaccinations and spay/neuter. Cats and kittens start at $75 and dogs and puppies range from $100 - $175 depending on age, size and breed. We also offer micro chips for an additional fee. For more information please send us an email at: vb-petfinder@comcast.net.

Come Visit Us!

A selected few of the FMAR adoptables can be seen at PETCO in Westland on the third Saturday of the month. Our PETCO hours are between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Stop by to learn more about us or to inquire about one of our pets. If you find a pet on line you would like to see at one of our Petco Saturdays, please give us a call and we will discuss bringing that pet with us.
