Starla came to us through our local animal control facility. She was found wandering emaciated and blind. We took her to the vet and found out she was diabetic. We discussed our next steps with the Blue Pearl Clinic in Ann Arbor (a specialist in eye surgery), it was determined that she was about 6 years old and very fixable. Starla was put on a good diet, insulin and given a lot of love. Blue Pearl Clinic performed Catarac surgery and the results were amazing. Since her surgery she has gained weight and it is very obvious she is very happy to have the gift of sight back. Starla is ready for her new home with a family that understands her medical issues and is willing to give her insulin injections twice a day, keep her on a strict diet, and give her great veterinary care. Starla is very loving. She isn't fond of cats and will chase after them but seems to love people, children and other dogs. If you have the resources for a special needs dog like Starla and would like to visit her please call the shelter to set up an appointment to visit her. 734-461-9458
Autumn is loving, cuddly, and beautiful girl who gave us a beatiful litter of kittens. She is a tortoise shell with deep black and orange patches.. Autumn is very quiet and would love a very quiet home and maybe a nice lap to curl up in or a window to lay in to watch the birds. If you would like to visit with Autumn please call the shelter to make an appointment 734-461-9458. Autumn is vaccinated, tested neg for FeLuk/FIV, is spayed and microchipped.

The barn that was donated to FMAR is now complete and the felines have moved in! We are calling our new shelter the Cat Haven and when you visit us you will agree that it was a perfect name. This new facility allows us to separate the cats from the dogs and give us room to help more animals. Our open house was on January 30th, 2011, when hundreds of people came to see the fruit of our labor. We believe it was more than any one of them imagined. A special thank you to everyone who helped by donating their time, talent and supplies to this very important project. We appreciate and love each of you.
FMAR continues to stay busy and grow. Our newsletters and website will continue to give you updates on where we are with our new cat haven as well as other exciting projects. If you aren't on our mailing list, please visit our website to sign up today! You can also visit us on Facebook.

FMAR Board of Directors, Linda Luke, Cathy Boatin, Eileen Russel, Bob Smith, Jessica Hassell, Sandy Seaton, Marcy and Pete LaFramboise and especially all of the animals who come to stay until they find their new loving forever homes, would like to take this time to wish a very special thank-you to all of the FMAR dedicated volunteers. FMAR wouldn't be where we are today without your support, dedication and teamwork. Blessings to all of you.
Thank you to to everyone who drops off supplies to the shelter and who takes the time to support us. FMAR is still looking for dedicated volunteers to help with the morning and afternoon cleaning, walking and socializing of our pets. If you have a few hours a week to spare, you can work independently with training and you are dependable and willing to get dirty at a gratifying job that pays in love and devotion, please call Sandy Seaton at 734 417-5117 to set up a time to come out and visit.
FMAR is fortunate to have a wonderful, creative person, Kenn Sheats, working on the newsletter for us. If you would like to be on our newsletter mailing list or would like to view the newsletter on line, please visit our website at www.fmar1.org. Johnston Lithograph is printing the newsletter for us and they are doing a fabulous job. Thank you so much to Keith Johnston and his team for their support and generous help with keeping the cost down for us.
Pete and Marcy love having visitors to see the animals and the shelter. We now have 14 inside/outside dog kennels and a 1400 square foot open and beautiful Cat Haven with a new community cat area and teen cat room. We have continued to stay very full since the shelter was opened in 2003, and now that the Cat Haven is completed we will still be full but will be able to double our capacity of both cats and dogs.
FMAR is blessed to have several dedicated part time volunteers who help us keep the shelter clean and the animals fed. Pete and Marcy not only run the shelter business they live on the property as well. I am sure you all understand how difficult it is to fit in a few minutes of family time when you work full time running a business. Pete and Marcy ask that you call 734 461-9458 to make sure someone is at the shelter before you come out to visit. Somewhere in their schedule they try to fit in dinner and conversation about the day's shelter activity. Because of their very busy schedule they have chosen not to take Sunday appointments and use Sunday to go to church, do household chores and, maybe fit some family time in. Your patience and understanding is appreciated. Thank you.
If you have 2 - 4 hours a week to give to a wonderful cause and are creative, hardworking and dependable, we would love to talk to you about joining our mission.
We have several openings, especially for morning kennel help and caring for the animals.
The hours would range from Monday - Saturday AM and PM (we can work something out fit to your schedule). FMAR is closed on Sunday for adoptions, but the animals still need to be cleaned, fed and loved. We would love to have a few dedicated volunteers on weekends to help take care of the animals. If you are interested in any of these volunteer oportunities and you are willing to commit at least 2-4 hours a week of your time to the care of the shelter animals, we would love to hear from you. Please call 734 417-5117 to contact our volunteer coordinator Sandy Seaton direct .
Our promise is a rewarding opportunity to help animals and service the community and help FMAR grow and flourish.
FMAR is searching for energic, dedicated volunteer dog walkers to add to our program. You will be walking dogs of all sizes and shapes so will need to be an energetic dog lover and a person who loves to walk. If you like to come by and see if you might be interested in our volunteer dog walking program please give our volunteer coordinator Sandy Seaton a call at 734-417-5117 to set up an appointment to come to the shelter and learn more about our dog walking program. Thank you for your interest.
FMAR is a non-profit 501(c)3 rescue for dogs and cats that started in April 2003 with the help and support wonderful volunteers and supporters. We grew by leaps and bounds, so we bought a 61/2 acre farm and renovated the smaller of the 2 barns with 9 dog kennels and 5 unique cat kennels. In 2005 we added a community cat area to our facility where all of our adult cats can socialize with each other, find a favorite window, or climb in a basket to nap. We also have a community dog area where our dogs get exercise and play.
The new cat haven has been a wonderful addition to our facility. In addition to the cat shelter we have almost completed the renovation to our dog retreat. We think you will agree that the improvements are great, so please call to come by and see the changes. We look forward to showing you around. For an appointment to visit the shelter please call 734-461-9458.
Our mission is to protect animals and residents by promoting a healthy and safe enviornment for all. FMAR felt we needed to start in our own community helping our Animal Control facility find homes for the strays they pick up or are brought to them. When we have extra space we have done our best to help out neighboring communities too. We are amazed and saddened every day by the abundance of homeless pets and hope to raise enough money to renovate our larger barn very soon. Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged us to continue when things got tough. We also appreciate your support and help with our continued growth so we can do more each and every year. Keep watching the best is yet to come!!
FMAR is an all breed rescue, and like you, we are concerned about the welfare of the animals and the families that adopt them. We will require paperwork to be filled out and a consultation before an animal is adopted. Interaction with any other animals in your care is also required. We reserve the right to deny any adoption that we feel is not safe or comfortable for either the animal or potential adopter. Our adoption costs vary, and include first set of vaccinations and spay/neuter. Cats and kittens start at $80 and dogs and puppies are $175 . We also offer micro chips for the dogs and cats you already have at home for an additional fee. For more information please send us an email at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
A few of the FMAR's adoptable pets can be seen at the Pet Emporium in Ann Arbor on the 2nd Saturday of the month or at the PETCO in Westland on the third Saturday of the month. Our adoption hours are between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Stop by to learn more about us or to inquire about one of our pets. If you find a pet on line you would like to see at one of our Petco Saturdays, please give us a call and we will discuss bringing that pet with us. Thank you for your interest in FMAR and our adoptable pets. Please scroll up for driving directions to both the Ann Arbor and Westland adoption partner locations. You can also visit the shelter Mon-Sat by calling the shelter and making an appointment to visit. Please leave a message at 734-461-9458 and we will return your call within 24 hours Mon - Sat. Please note the shelter is run by volunteer staff and does not have regular business hours yet. We do however try our best to schedule a time that works great for you and your family. FMAR is CLOSED on Sundays. Thank you for your interest in our shelter and the animals who come to stay until a new loving home is found. FMAR is happy to give you detailed directions when you schedule an appointment to visit. www.fmar1.org/index.html
