Otis is a hoot! He has the longest legs you ever seen on a hunting dog with long ears and a look on his face that will melt your heart. Goofy is doing great at the shelter and would like to show a great loving family what a wonderful addition he can be with long walks and a little attention. If you are looking for a beautiful, tall hound dog to make your family complete, you might want to make an appointment to come to the shelter and meet Otis. Otis is vaccinated, neutered, micro chipped, and now tested neg for heartworm and on preventative.
Kiki is full of fun and energy with a beautiful long shiny silky black coat. He is the first to greet you in the teen cat room and will ride on your back or shoulder for as long as you will let him. He loves to play and is first one to initiate play among the group. If you are looking for a very active, playful and entertaining cat, Kiki may be just what your family wants. Because Kiki is so full of play and energy she should go to a family who is familiar with cat play and has a lot of time to play with him and release some of his energy. Kiki is up to date on vaccinations, tested neg for FeLuk/FIV, is micro chipped and spayed.

Lincoln Elementary School Bright Futures After School Program are donating proceeds from SALES OF Their ORIGINAL Songs to the Friends of Michigan Animals Rescue. The singing and musical talents of these elementary children are amazing. The CD's are selling for $5 but I am sure you will agree they are worth much much more. The barn that was donated to FMAR has moved to Arkona Road, secured to the ground and ready for a foundation and renovation That's right. It took us about a year to work out all of the details, but on Tuesday, April 28th, a 1200 square foot pole barn gingerly moved down Rawsonville Rd., south of I-94 in Belleville, to our shelter. It was about a 5 mile drive and we were escorted by Sumpter Police Department , as well as, the FMAR shelter van, cable and utility companies. This will allow us to separate the cats from the dogs and give us room to help more animals. Stay tuned as we update all of you on the renovations and finally our big open house.
The 2nd phase took place in October as we secured the barn to the ground, added sand and made things ready for plumbing.
The Xerox Corporation came out for their 4th Annual Volunteer day and removed the old drywall and prepared the walls for new walls. Our next step is to have the rough plumbing installed and pour the cement floor. FMAR would like to thank everyone for their donations and discounted and/or free labor. This project would take much longer without your support.
We are going to need a tons more buiding supplies, so if you live in the Belleville area or know of a contractor that is willing to donate materials please contact the shelter via email at vb-petlover@comcast.net to discuss. So far we have a furnace and air conditioner donated!
For more information on the barn and renovations to the shelter please visit our website at www.fmar1.org. Please stay tuned!
FMAR Board of Directors, Linda Luke, Page McLaughlin, Cathy Boatin, Orsi Dezsi, Eileen Russel, Bob Smith, Marcy and Pete LaFramboise and especially all of the animals who come to stay until they find their new loving forever homes, would like to take this time to wish a very special thank-you to all of the FMAR dedicated volunteers. FMAR wouldn't be where we are today without your support, dedication and teamwork. Blessings to all of you.
Thank you to to everyone who drops off supplies to the shelter and who takes the time to support us. FMAR is still looking for dedicated volunteers to help with the morning and afternoon cleaning, walking and socializing of our pets. If you have a few hours a week to spare, you can work independently with training and you are dependable and willing to get dirty at a gratifying job that pays in love and devotion, please call Weezey at 734 516-1513 to set up a time to come out and visit.
FMAR is fortunate to have a wonderful, creative person, Kenn Sheats, working on the newsletter for us. We think you will be pleasantly surprised with the new format. If you would like to be on our newsletter mailing list or would like to view the newsletter on line, please visit our website at www.fmar1.org. Johnston Lithograph is printing the newsletter and our flyers for us and they are doing a fabulous job. Thank you so much to Keith Johnston and his team for their support and generous help with keeping the cost down for us.We have several openings, especially for morning kennel help and caring for the animals.
The hours would range from Monday - Saturday AM and PM (we can work something out fit to your schedule). FMAR is closed on Sunday for adoptions, but the animals still need to be cleaned, fed and loved. We would love to have a few dedicated volunteers on weekends to help take care of the animals. If you are interested in any of these volunteer oportunities and you are willing to commit at least 2-4 hours a week of your time to the care of the shelter animals, we would love to hear from you. Please call 734 516-1513 to contact our volunteer coordinator (Weezey) direct .Our promise is a rewarding opportunity to help animals and service the community and help FMAR grow and flourish.
FMAR is searching for energic, dedicated volunteer dog walkers to add to our program. You will be walking dogs of all sizes and shapes so will need to be an energetic dog lover and a person who loves to walk. If you like to come by and see if you might be interested in our volunteer dog walking program please give our volunteer coordinator Weezey a call at 734-516-1513 to set up an appointment to come to the shelter and learn more about our dog walking program. You can also send us an email through by visiting our website at www.fmar1.org. Thank you for your interest. In 2009 we had our biggest kitten season ever and our lowest adoption rate. Our kittens soom became teens and the older felines were not fond of sharing their space with them. Pete constructed a temporary area in the shelter for the teens until we can get the cat haven renovated and ready for all of our felines. The new cat haven will not only give us room for the teens it will allowed us to house a larger number of pets (dogs and cats).
Our mission is to protect animals and residents by promoting a healthy and safe enviornment for all. FMAR felt we needed to start in our own community helping our Animal Control facility find homes for the strays they pick up or are brought to them. When we have extra space we have done our best to help out neighboring communities too. We are amazed and saddened every day by the abundance of homeless pets and hope to raise enough money to renovate our larger barn very soon. Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged us to continue when things got tough. We also appreciate your support and help with our continued growth so we can do more each and every year. Keep watching the best is yet to come!!
