German Shepherd Rescue of Michigan

Our Pet List

German Shepherd Rescue of Michigan, Inc is a statewide rescue organized to assist with the placement of the German Shepherd Dog (GSD). Our goal is to protect the German Shepherd from suffering due to cruelty, homelessness, ignorance, neglect and misuse, by finding those needy German Shepherds permanent loving adoptive homes where they will be lifelong members of the family. We are funded entirely by donations and fundraising with the majority of our expenses being for necessary vet care such as spay/neutering, vaccinations, and emergency care.

Adopting a German Shepherd Dog

Faithful companions, true guardians, family playmates; German Shepherd Dogs are amazingly versatile and intelligent pets. The GSD is a large dog weighing between 75-95 pounds and standing 22-26 inches tall. The GSD should be direct and fearless, but not aggressive, self-confident yet aloof, but should be approachable. GSDs were bred to work. Boredom leads to destruction (and the need for rescue). But a well bred, socialized, and trained GSD will repay these efforts with faithfulness, loyalty, and intelligence of a true friend.

Due to the large number of GSD in need, our foster home space is restricted to emergency cases only. This includes shelter dogs, strays, and cruelty and neglect cases. We are unable to foster in our program a privately owned GSD however we do offer referral assistance for these dogs in need of placement assistance. Please contact us.

We are always delighted to hear from people interested in giving one of these wonderful German Shepherds a responsible, lifelong home. All interested adopters must be interviewed and have completed an adoption application. It is important to try to match the needs of the potential adoptive family with that of the GSD in rescue. All family members are requested to visit with the dogs before adoption. Cost for adoption is $250 and includes the dog's current vet records, vaccinations, spay/neuter, and often-basic obedience.

German Shepherds were bred to work for us and be a part of the "flock". They become deeply devoted to the entire family. The GSD needs to share all aspects of their family's daily life - being with you in your home and going with you when you go out, following you from room to room. Nothing goes unnoticed. They thrive on being near you, a head or paw in your lap. If you feel you may not truly enjoy having a dog's constant companionship, enjoy having him sleep in your bedroom at night and share many of your activities by day, then you may be happier with a breed less oriented to human companionship. The GSD is NOT an outside guard dog.
