Adoptions are limited to within 150 miles of Grand Rapids/Lake Odessa, MI

For safety's sake, we REQUIRE the adopters home to have a PHYSICAL FENCED in area/yard for the dog. NO invisible fences.

Who We Are

Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary is the largest no-kill dog Sanctuary in the Midwest and is dedicated to finding homes for abused, abandoned and neglected dogs. MAS was founded by the Azzar Family in August of 1999 after the passing of their beloved dog, Mackenzie. MAS has the capacity to house up to 115 dogs. As space allows, it is Mackenzie's policy to assist other local animal welfare shelters and rescues by taking in dogs that may otherwise be euthanized. Owner surrenders and stray are not accepted at MAS (If you find a stray, by law, you are required to contact your local animal control. Someone could be looking for their dog!). Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary (aka Mackenzie's Foundation or MAS) is a federally recegonized as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. MAS is funded solely on private donations and does not receive any state, local or federal funding. Any future growth depends on our supporters.

Our Goal:

We ultimately try to find homes for our dogs, but if we cannot, we will always have a warm and loving home for them right here at the Sanctuary.

Our Mission:

Adopting from MAS - Policies and Requirements

  • #1 MAS is not open to the public and we do not do "same day adoptions". You must have a scheduled appointment with the Adoption Coordinator to see our dogs.
  • #2 To schedule an appointment, you must complete the online adoption survey.
  • #3 For safety's sake, MAS requires a physical fenced in area/yard for the dog. Fenced in "yards" are ideal, however, a fenced in "dog run" (about a 12 x 12 area) is acceptable as long as there is ample space for the dog. An invisible fence is not a physical fence and offers no form of protection to the dog, therefore invisible fences will not be accepted.
  • #4 MAS limits adoptions to 150 miles of the Lake Odessa/Grand Rapids, Michigan area.
  • #5 You must be at least 21 years of age or older.

    How to Adopt from MAS

    Our adoption process is very thougtful and may even require up to three visits to complete the adoption process. Please note the following steps:
  • Step 1: Please fill out our online adoption survey. Please include the name of the dog(s) that you are interested in potentially adopting. If the dog is online, that means the dog is still available for adoption. Applications are reviewed in the order that they are received.
  • Step 2: Once your adoption application has been received, the Adoption Coordinator will then contact you. Please have your veterinary references (if applicable) and personal references (2) ready at this time. PLEASE NOTE: We only have on Adoption Coordinator and it may take at least one week for them to contact you. If you do not hear from the Adoption Coordinator within a week (five business days from the time you submitted your application) feel free to call the office to follow-up and confirm you submitted it correctly.
  • Step 3: Once the Adoption Coordinator has verified your references they will then contact you to schedule your first visit to MAS.
  • Step 4: Once you have decided on a dog, the Adoption Coordinator will then schedule a second visit wth you and any additional family members in the home (including other cats and dogs).
  • Step 5: The third (and final) visit is the home visit. This visit is to make sure the dog is comfortable in the new home and to guarantee that you have a physical fenced in area for the dog.

    Adoption Fee

    The adoption fee is $150 and includes spay/neuter, flea and heartworm preventative, current vaccinations and micro-chipping. The adoption fee for puppies is $200 and includes a refundable $50 spay/neuter deposit.

    MEET YOUR MATCH

  • The Meet Your Match canine-ality adoption program is designed to match an adopter's person-ality, lifestyle, and energy level to a dog's canine-ality. Making that match is the foundation for the human/canine bond to develop, increasing the potential for a successful, permanent placement. Each dog is tested to determine his general canine-ality, such traits as friendliness, playfulness, energy level and motivation or drive. The Adopter Survey takes a potential adopters experience level and adds to how they envision their new dog fitting into their home and family. Using these tools together, Mackenzieís continues to find the best fit between our adopters and our dogs.

    Color Coding and Descriptions:

    After the testing is completed the dogsí score is added up, they are given one of the three colors; Green, Orange or Purple. We then review our notes to see how the dog responded to each test. All of this helps us to determine the canine-ality description that best fits the dog under their color.

    Purple = Easy Maintenance Dogs

    The canine-ality description for these dogs could be:
  • Couch Potato:Like the easy life? Then Iím the perfect match for you. Iím relaxed, laid back kind of dog who enjoys long naps, watching movies, curling up on laps, and walking very short distances from the couch to the food bowl and back.
  • Constant Companion:Looking for an emotionally secure, mutually satisfying, low maintenance relationship? I am all you need. Let me sit at your feet, walk by your side, and Iíll be your devoted companion forever.
  • Teacherís Pet: Iíve got the whole package Ė smart, fuzzy, four legs, love to learn and live to please. Go ahead, teach me anything. Sit, stay, balance your checkbook, I can do it all. Keep me entertained and Iíll be yours forever.

    Orange = Average Maintenance Dogs

    The canine-ality description for these dogs could be:
  • Wallflower: Shy yet charming canine searching for patient owner with relaxed lifestyle. Looking for gentle guidance to help me come out of my shell. Treat me sweet and kind and Iíll blossom.
  • Busy Bee: Iím a naturally playful, curious, and trusting canine. Take me for a big walk every day; give me something to do. After my jobís done, Iíll curl up in front of the fire with you in the evenings. Iím a dog on a mission to please you and myself.
  • Goofball: Iím a fun-loving, happy-all-the-time, glass-is-half-full kind of dog looking for someone who loves to laugh and play around. Must have a great sense of humor and a bunch of tennis balls.

    Green = High Maintenance Dogs

    The canine-ality description for these dogs could be:
  • Life of the Party: I think everything is fun, interesting and meant for play, especially you. Anything you do, Iíll want to do too. With my own brand of surprises, life with me will keep you constantly on your toes, and the fun is guaranteed.
  • Go-Getter: Want to get more exercise? Action is my middle name. My ďLetís GO!Ē lifestyle will keep you motivated to get outside and move. Iíve got tons of energy; and just like the sun, Iím burning and working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Iíll run for miles, chase a ball for hours, and still want to play at the end of the day.
  • Free Spirit:Intelligent, independent, confident and clever, I prefer making my own decisions but will listen to you if you make a good case. Weíre partners in this adventure. Treat me like one and weíll both live happily ever after.
