**Who We Are**

The Shiawassee Humane Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, that started in 1954. We moved to the current location at 2752 W. Bennington Rd. In the late 1970's. Our facility houses up to 1600 cats and dogs each year. Since we can only house so many animals at one time, we have "waiting lists" to bring your animals in. Currently we are not accepting any cats at this time.

**Adopting A Friend**

If you are interested in adopting a pet you must reside with in the state of Michigan, no out of state adoptions. We encourage you to come out with your whole family when choosing an animal. We have an adoption application that we require to be filled out prior to adopting the animal. We ask for some basic background information, like what kinds of pets you have owned, or currently own. We also ask for a personal reference, and a veterinarian reference. Our prices include age appropriate vaccinations, heartworm and Fiv/Felv testing, basic deworming and spay or neuter of the animal. Dog adoption prices are$150.00, the adoption includes a rabies vaccine as well. Cats are $100.00.

The adoption process takes a minimum of 24 hours. All pets MUST be spayed or neutered prior to going to their new homes. To speed up the adoption process, you may bring in vet records of currents animals that you own. If you are driving from a long distance we encourage you to call us ahead of time so we can either fax or mail you an application. We currently working on having an application available online!

**Volunteering**

Here at SHS we have numerous volunteer opportunities.

If you are 18 years or older and do not intend to bring children with you to volunteer, you qualify for the Adult Program. Adult volunteers have the greatest range of volunteer options. They can pursue any of the volunteer positions available and work with any of the animals available for adoption.

If you are between the ages of 12-18 you will be a Junior Volunteer. Junior volunteers can volunteer in the TLC program only (like washing and folding laundry, walking the dogs, petting and brushing the cats and dogs, and helping the staff in the mornings cleaning kennels). A parent or legal guardian must be present to fill out a volunteer application. After an application is filled out you may volunteer on your own without a parent or guardian present.

The Family Program is for families with children between the ages of 8 and 12 who want to enjoy the experience of volunteering together at the shelter as a family. In the family program a parent or guardian must be present at all times.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer there is an application to fill out and all new volunteers must attend an orientation. Orientations are about one and a half hours long. Please call us at 989-723-4262 for further information.
