Who We Are
Caring for animals since 1927
The Kennebec Valley Humane Society is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization serving 24 communities in the Greater Kennebec Valley area.
Municipal services:
KVHS serves as an animal control facility with 24 hour, 7-day-a-week access, for Animal Control Officers.
KVHS holds stray dogs for the state-mandated six-day holding period. This period allows owners to reclaim their dogs before making them available for adoption.
KVHS holds stray cats for five days (state-mandate is only 24 hours without identification) before making them available for adoption. This period allows owners to reclaim their cats before making them available for adoption.
KVHS provides a quarantine facility for stray animals that have bitten people for the State mandated ten day rabies observation period.
KVHS collects impoundment fees as requested by municipalities and ensures all reclaimed dogs are vaccinated for rabies and licensed.
Public services:
Upon admittance animals receive a vet exam, rabies and distemper vaccinations.
HW/lyme/ehrlichiosis testing is administered for dogs and FeLV/FIV testing is administered for cats.
lf not altered, animals are required to be spayed/neutered within 30 days of adoption.
KVHS offers microchips, one form of permanent identification.
KVHS offers lost and found services
KVHS, in conjunction with 11 participating veterinarians, offers a free exam program for new adopters
KVHS offers spay/neuter loans payable at $5.00 per month with no interest
