Our Mission
Give a Dog a Home Rescue is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abused and neglected animals, providing them with a safe haven and finding them loving forever homes. In rural Maine's economically challenged county, we are committed to supporting our community by offering comprehensive programs that educate pet owners, provide resources, and ensure pets receive proper care and attention. Our goal is to create a world where every animal is valued and loved, and where families can keep and provide for their pets regardless of their socio-economic situation.
In addition to our life-saving rescue efforts, Give a Dog a Home Rescue offers a variety of community programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of our community. These include Let’s go for a Walk, Doggy Day Out program the Feed the Need Pet Pantry, Wellness on Wheels, low-cost pet services. Our newest program, the Humans & Hounds Social Club exemplifies our commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. We are also an Ambassador for the Greater Goods Charities acting as a distribution center of donated pet food and products to other non-profit organizations across the state.
The Humans & Hounds Social Club welcomes individuals of all ages and backgrounds, providing a space for companionship, support, and a sense of belonging. In addition to our regular activities, such as socializing with the dogs, a baking club and a mobile photo booth, we are working on setting up a gardening club and organizing outings and adventures for our members. Our programs cater to seniors seeking connection, families in need of assistance, and individuals facing loneliness or mental health challenges. We prioritize serving those who may not have access to similar programs due to financial or geographic limitations. Our goal is to create a supportive environment where all community members can come together, share experiences, and find joy in the company of our rescued dogs.
Give a Dog a Home Rescue collaborates with several organizations that share our mission of animal welfare and community support. We work closely with animal shelters and rescue groups in the south to save animals from high-kill shelters and provide them with a second chance at life. Additionally, we partner with other nonprofits serving mentally challenged individuals, underprivileged families, and senior citizens in our Humans & Hounds Social Club. This collaboration ensures that our programs cater to a diverse range of community members, offering companionship, support, and a sense of belonging to those in need.
Give a Dog a Home Rescue provides its kennel building and community room for weekly programs and gatherings, offering a space for community engagement and support. Our shuttle bus is available for outings or transportation, ensuring accessibility for all. We collaborate with our community to identify needs and opportunities, aiming to provide unique experiences while also ensuring our rescue dogs benefit from socialization, fun, and mental stimulation.
Adoption Policy
If you would like to start the adoption our process is below:
Please note the rescue is run by a volunteer and is very busy. Do NOT constantly email or phone, if you need to email or call, please send just one communication and wait for someone to respond.
Submit Application with two personal references and a vet reference. If you have never had pets and do not have a vet, we will need THREE personal references. Ensure references are people who know you and your lifestyle well.
Applicant MUST inform vet and references that someone from GaDaH will be calling.
As long as we are able to contact your vet and references, it takes just 1-3 days to process and hopefully approve applications.
If you rent we will need an approval letter for the breed of dog you are wanting to adopt from your landlord on official letterhead paper or email.
Rescue processes and hopefully approves applications.
Once approved, rescue invites applicant to come to the rescue to meet your chosen dog/s, spend time with him/her and then hopefully take him/her home.
We do NOT hold dogs so if you are unable to come within a week or so of submitting your application the dog will still be available for adoption to other families.
For Canadian adopters, all that is needed to get them across the border into Canada is a current rabies certificate and proof of adoption, which is the adoption contract. Ensure ALL Fields are filled in, if something is relevant, then put n/a or something in so it recognizes an entry.
We do not recommend using a phone or ipad since these applications for some reason don't tend to come through and you will have spent a lot of time on the application for nothing as it will need to be re-done.
Once we have you approved we can schedule an appointment for you to come to meet him/her at the rescue in Sebec, Mane and then hopefully take them home to start your new life. I just have to work on an appointment basis as I run a boarding/day care business and the rescue and so am really busy, but by planning ahead of time I can be pretty flexible.
