How can we help the animals? By giving someone (maybe you) $5000 or sending two people to Hawaii. Sound crazy? It's true. Our goal is always to continue to offer our services to provide food, shelter, medical help and new homes to the animals that come to us. For a $50 conribution, you'll be given a unique ticket number that could be drawn in October as the winner of the money or the trip...your choice! There are other prizes as well. You can get a ticket, read the rules, or find more information at http://www.humanesocietycc.org/raffle.html and help ensure an animal a better life. Your help is always appreciated. Now you have a chance to know how much. Click here.

Who We Are

The Humane Society of Charles County is a private, non-profit humane organization that has served Southern Maryland for the last 31 years. We are located at 71 Industrial Park Drive, St. Charles, Waldorf, Maryland.

HOURS: We are open to the public 6 days a week. Hours are 11AM to 6PM every day except Thursday. On Thursdays we are open 1PM to 6PM. We close on Sundays and for major holidays (but don't worry...our volunteers still come in to care for the animals!).
Map to our shelter

The Humane Society of Charles County started in 1978 with only 25 members and less than $100. Our single objective was to rescue dogs and cats hit by cars. Today we are over 1,000 families strong! Our services have greatly expanded over the years and we are now able to shelter and rehabilitate rescued animals in our modern facility on Industrial Park Drive in St. Charles. In 1989, we expanded our dog run area from 10 to 24 runs. Thanks to your contributions and generous grants, we began operating a spay/neuter clinic on the premises! Because of your support, we can continue to operate for the benefit of both the animals and residents of Charles County.

You can help feed and shelter pets that need a home... donating is easy and just a click away

Adopting a friend

If you decide to adopt a dog from the Humane Society, we ask that you complete the:
to give us additional information about you and where your pet will be living. You can print it out and fill out the bulk of it at home, then bring it with you to save yourself some time! The Humane Society will verify information given on the application. There is a 24 hour "cooling off" period before an adoption may be completed. The Humane Society will also do a yard check for dogs.

Applying to adopt a cat is almost the same as for the dog (above), with some minor differences. Kittens require a distemper vaccination (adults require a yearly distemper vaccinations) and there is no yard check required to adopt a kitten or an adult cat. You can print out the:
fill out most of it and bring it with you to save yourself some time!
yard check before making dog adoptions; a fenced yard is required unless waived by the Shelter Manager.

Adoption Fees

The good news is, you can generally find a pet here for far less than in most pet stores. Its unfortunate that we cannot give away the animals free of charge, but in order to continue operating we must recover some of the costs of care (such as medical examinations, food, utilities and other costs). All fees are used to cover operating costs, repairs and improvements necessary to provide the care required for lost, stray, or abandoned pets brought to the Humane Society (we're a non-profit organization). Our schedule of fees is as follows (it can change, so call us to confirm fees):
Spayed/Neutered Adult Dogs ....$95 (includes microchipping)
Spayed/Neutered Puppies Under 4 Months Old....$125 plus refundable $50 deposit to ensure training
Spayed/Neutered Adult Cats..............$95.00 (includes microchipping)
Spayed/Neutered Kittens Under 4 Months Old....$95 dollars

Adoption Contract

When approved for adoption of a pet from the Humane Society, you must complete and sign the ADOPTION CONTRACT. Our cats and dogs are spayed and neutered and have a microchip that can be read by a special scanner. The chip contains information that will allow a shelter that can read the chip to assist in returning the pet to its owner.

Donations for new dog runs.We recently upgraded the old chain link in the first 10 runs in our dog kennel section. The new run fronts and doors that have a privacy panel on the bottom and glass on the top. If you visit our shelter now you will find that it is a little quieter in the lobby area. The dogs are less stressed and feel more secure because they have more privacy but visitors can still see them through the glass tops. The next step is to raise funds to replace the run fronts in the second run area.
We are looking for sponsors for each of the doors. The cost per door is $750. Sponsors will have a 7" x 5" plaque permanently attached to the door, inscribed with their name or any other information they would like. If you are interested in making the lives of our abandoned animals just a little bit better while they wait for new homes, please contact Jean Stuller at 301-645-8181 or email her.
