Family Pack Rescue is always looking for fosters, can you help? Read some of our common questions below and write us if you would like to find out more about how you can save a dog in need.

Commonly Asked Questions about Fostering Dogs:

How many dogs would I have to foster?
You may take in as many dogs or as few as you wish. Even fostering one dog would help a great deal.

Do I get to choose which dog I foster?
We try to match the foster dog to the home it will be going to. If you require a particular size, or if you need a dog who is good with children or other pets, we do our best to meet that criteria. We encourage the foster home to meet the prospective dog at the shelter before bringing it home, to insure a good match.

How much will it cost to foster a dog?
FPR pays the cost of all veterinary care and supplies crates and leashes if needed, as well as more supplies for puppies as they require more.

How long does it take for a dog to get adopted?
We cannot make any promises regarding how long a particular dog will be in your home. On average, it takes between a week and a month for a dog to find a permanent home. A dog recovering from health problems may take a bit longer than a healthy dog.

Will I be involved in choosing the dog’s new owner?
We have found that foster homes are the best judge of what kind of home is the best fit for their foster dog’s particular needs. You will be involved in the screening process of potential adopters, in order to find the best home for the dog. We will include you in this process and you will be allowed to keep in contact with your foster dogs' new parents. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming a foster home.

We are in DESPERATE need of donations:

Old used towels and blankets, crates (new or used), paper towels, lysol wipes or other disinfecting wipes, trash bags, bleach, hand sanitizer, dog toys, dog food, puppy food, nutrical, dog vitamins, puppy pads,(new or used), leashes, collars, gentle leaders & dog beds (new or used).

We are raising these donations for our rescue and the kill shelters who do NOT receive government funding. Most of these animals cannot make it simply because some of the counties governing the shelters' in WV do NOT provide food or medication for these shelter animals. PLEASE consider making a donation, used donations are GREAT!! All donations can be brought to the adoption event and will be used for the rescue or sent to the shelters most in need.

How can you help?

1. Adopt an animal from us! For every home we find, another foster home or another kennel in a kill shelter is opened up for another animal.

2. Foster an animal from us. Often these dogs and cats need a few days to a few weeks to find a home once they are transported into the Frederick area. Some special needs animals need a bit of TLC including medications to treat upper respiratory infections or some basic manners training. We need people to volunteer to take dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and pregnant mommies into their homes for short periods of time. You are responsible for only their daily care and food/water. We supply kennels, leashes, and vet expenses. We find the homes and we work with you for potential adopters to meet their new friends. Most the of time we are limited to how many dogs we can save because of limited foster homes. If you only want certain breeds, sexes, sizes etc, we can work to pull the animals that work best in your household. Email us if you are interested in foster care!!!

3. Volunteer to help at our adoption days or to transport animals. One of the other limiting factors in saving these animals is that they are in shelters anywhere from 45 minutes to 7 hours away from Frederick, MD. Often we have a home for an animal but that dog or cat is still put down because we cannot get out to the shelter fast enough or the transports coming from that area are full. Transport volunteers offer their time and/or vehicle to pick these animals up. We supply the kennels, pull fees, leashes, etc....you just drive! It is hard to explain to a potential adopter that the animal they had their heart set on has been put down just because we didn't have transportation! Want to start out even easier? How about just volunteering to pick up a foster dog in the local area and bring it to our adoption events? Sometimes our foster parents can't get to an event but they still want the dog to find a new home....all you have to do is stop by their home and bring the dog in and take the dog back at the end. How easy is that?

4. Donate! We are always in need of vet fees, kennels, food, leashes, toys for cats and dogs, paper towels, cleaning supplies, dog beds, cat trees, collars and a multitude of other items. We accept new and used donations. Financial donations can be made to the rescue, directly to the vets or directly to the shelters we pull from. Many of these shelters do not get funding for anything beyond shelter and workers...no food, no vets, no toys..nothing. One shelter we work with doesn't even get funding for staff on the weekends...this means all the animals are put down on Fridays unless a shelter worker volunteers to come in on the weekend. These shelters are all in poor areas of West Virginia and Ohio where animal care is at the bottom of the county funding. Contact us to find out how your donations can help both our rescue and these shelters!

5. Sponsor! sponsor a dog, this allows us to save the dog that you are interested in and then what we will do is take the funds you donate on his or her behalf to get them out of the kill shelter and transported to another area shelter where they will be safe from euthanasia and then adopted. We can provide a picture and an update to the sponsor on where the dog goes and what has happened with the dog. This is a small fee and little has to be done on your part and then you pick the dog you want to save and you actually have provided the funding to get him or her out of the shelter and safe. Look at the dogs that say need sponsor and let us know right away if you are interested.

Adopting a friend

We have an adoption application that will need to be filled out if you are interested in one of our animals.Applications can be requested via e-mail only, once you have completed it send it back to us via e-mail for review. If you are approved we will arrange for you to meet the pet. If the "match" between the pet and prospective family is good then we will have you sign a contract and pay an adoption fee! Adoption fees vary and are at the discretion of the rescue. Rescue fees go toward are continuing work to rescue additional animals in need. These fees are used to pay fees to the shelters, to pay for shots given at the shelters as well as any additional vetting, gas, rental vehicles, boarding fees, administrative fees, costs to run the rescue, insurance, food and supplies for the dogs, and and then we also try to have a pool of funds for vetting sick animals. On average our monthly costs are about $ 2000 - $3000. We could not save these animals without these adoption fees and even with the fees the rescue is still left in debt, that is why we depend on volunteers and donations to cover additional costs that the fees do not cover. These items may seem tedious but help us to make sure we can continue to save dogs from euthanasia and then to also make sure once they're saved that our rescued dogs only go to loving, caring families. We also make sure if they are ever released that we will get them returned directly to our care, so they will not go back to a shelter again. Thank you for your patience in this process!

Adoption applications can be requested by e-mail (see address below or their is a link in each adoptable animal's page).

We foster all of our dogs in our homes or they are currently in Kill Shelters in WV and Ohio. For privacy reasons do not take unscheduled visits. We are happy to bring a animal out to meet you if we have them or we can set up an appointment at the foster parent's house to see the dog you are interested in. If the dog is in a kill shelter you may have to fill out an adoption application before we can rescue the dog so please let your interest be known to us asap so we can plan transport to rescue that dog before it is euthanized. Please also be patient and understand that sometimes even our best efforts still result in the animal being put down. If we cannot arrange transport or if our transports are full, the shelters may still put the animal down without notifying us first. Although our success rate is good and our relationships with these shelters is growing, we are sometimes forced to watch adoptable animals die.
