How to Foster or Adopt
Support Us
Contact Us
If you see a pet on our website that you would like to meet, please send us an e-mail with your phone number and we will call you back as soon as possible. Our contact for adoption is jsapp1@verizon.net. We like to talk to people before we introduce your to our residents, just to let you know a little more about a particular pet. At the point when we have received several inquiries about a resident, we temporarily remove them from the website until we can work through the inquiries to find the best match for animals and families. Please be patient with us as we all work other jobs to feed our resident and foster pet families!
Lizzy's Lodge News and Upcoming Events
Unfortunately, the snow predicted for this weekend is causing us to cancel our adoption event on Saturday, Feb 6. Please check our website and call us if you want to meet one of our pets when we dig ourselves out. Thanks all!!!
PetFinder and the Animal Rescue site are again holding the Shelter Challenge, where you can vote daily to increase our chances of winning cash to help with our vet bills. We need votes from you, your friends, families, anyone you know to get our vote counts up. Please check it out and vote for us every day.

We again have been approved as a charity in the Combined Federal Campaign and the United Way Campaign of the National Capital Area, for the 2009-2010 season. If your employer is a participant, please consider Lizzy's for your directed donation. Our CFC number is 71317, and the UWCNCA number is 9322. All donations help so much......

Like everything else, our vet bills are increasing every day. We are also rescuing more animals with medical needs; people surrender or abandon them particularly when finances are tight. While our wonderful volunteers give of their hearts and homes, Lizzy's tries to help with the medical bills.
If you are able to help, we are registered with Network for Good (https://www.networkforgood.org) and are able to accept on-line donations for Lizzy's Lodge year round. Or, use Petfinder to sponsor or contribute to a fostered pet on the website; scroll down our page for details. And of course, a check to Lizzy's via snail mail at P.O. Box 3741, Silver Spring MD, 20918-3741 is always welcome. Even the smallest bit helps. All donations are tax deductible and we thank you so very much.

We need very special people to foster; those who can love and let go, just like letting the kids go to college. You can do so much by giving an abandoned animal a chance to regain their faith in humans in a loving environment before going to a permanent home. Lizzy's Lodge has arrangements for veterinary care with participating vets and can provide food and supplies while you foster. You provide the most necessary elements: love and patience to get our friends back on their four feet.

If one of our website pets just tugs at your heartstrings, you can sponsor an adoptable animal with a monetary donation with PetFinder's help. Just click on the "sponsor this pet" icon on the pet's page to donate funds for that pet. With help from PetSmart, PetFinder and our Vet, any donation can go a long way to helping with food and vet bills. All of our animals are neutered, chipped and get all their shots before adoptions are finalized.

Lizzy's Lodge is a 501(c)3 organization incorporated in late 2006 to rescue pets in danger at high-kill shelters, and give them a chance for renewal in foster homes. Lizzy's Lodge was formed as we saw an increasing number of people treating companion animals as disposable items.
Experienced pet owners know it takes time, training and love to create the beautiful bond between people and pets, and time seems to be something that many people no longer have for their pets. Training problems (both the pet and the people) are believed to be the most frequent reason that adoptable animals are dumped in overwhelmed local shelters. Abandoned by the only people the pet knew, now in a noisy, crowded kennel, the animal's true personality will rarely be displayed and temperament testing some animals for potential adoption can be a disaster.
Lizzy's Lodge networks with local shelters and other rescue groups, placing animals in less stressful foster situations, giving them a chance to let their true personalities return. Then, as we begin to know the pet, we are able to match the animals with new people who can understand them; often this takes time, but is well worth the effort. Approaches to training with love are at the heart of our program; we want to match the right human and canine companions, and to support the pet and the family during and after the adoption process.
Sadly, because we are all volunteer and our mission includes continual support for our adopted friends, we find that we must limit our adoptions to the DC metro area. Maybe some day we can adopt on a national scale.
One more thing about Lizzy's Lodge......
We do not have a physical location; we foster animals in volunteer homes, and must schedule meetings with prospective adopters or fosters a few days in advance, or arrange to meet at upcoming events. Your patience is greatly appreciated.
We are always looking for adult volunteers to join us; we need help with graphics and photography, manning information booths at different functions, web site updates and lots of other things. We even bake doggie cookies for our four legged friends!! Please e-mail us to volunteer and join the fun.
If you are interested in an adoptable companion on our site or have room in your heart and home for a foster pet, please contact us via e-mail for an application to foster or adopt. We'll e-mail you the appropriate application. Completed applications can be returned by fax (number on the application) or e-mail. We will contact you to tell you more about the pet in our care and to review your application. Then, one of our volunteers will schedule a time for you to meet the animal in a neutral site and to arrange a home visit. If all parties agree (including the current resident pet if necessary!) the adoption will proceed. We allow for a two week adjustment period between the new family and the companion animal.
All of our animals are neutered or spayed before the adoption is finalized, and are given all needed shots; copies of their health records are provided when the adoption is complete, after the two week acclimation period for the animal and the family. Fees for adoption vary depending on the age of the animal. We also ask that individuals sign an adoption agreement that specifies that the animal will be returned to us at any time if circumstances change and the pet can no longer stay with the
adopter.
If you are looking for a particular type of companion pet and/or one is not listed on our site, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail. We are in constant contact with local shelters and other local rescue groups that have all kinds of animals in their care. We will refer you to other groups via our network. All of us have the same goal; to find an abandoned animal a good home.
