Katrina isn't up for adoption, but she's our newest arrival. Leslie has a heating pad on the back porch where the feeding station for the feral cats is. Katrina showed up one Sunday afternoon. She was so weak from starvation she could barely stand up, but she at least had found warmth on the heating pad. After a week of feeding her with a syringe and giving her sub-q fluids, she's finally eating on her own, but she's tested positive for feline leukemia so her outlook isn't good. She's got the bathroom to herself and her own heating pad. She's warm and dry and fed and loved. Hopefully, she'll have some quality time left to her.
News
11/22/09 - We're looking for a nice barn home for a group of shy, but friendly outdoor cats. They belong to a 91 year old woman who is having trouble caring for them. There are twenty cats, but they can be broken up into smaller groups if we can't relocate them all together. They've all been spayed or neutered and are vaccinated for rabies. Call Leslie if you can take some or all of them. Leslie 443-244-3359
Who We Are
WE CANNOT TAKE ANYMORE CATS. We can't afford the ones we have, and we don't have any space left. Our adoption rate has dropped significantly since the economic woes began. We have many wonderful cats and kittens up for adoption (not all are posted - we're out of hours in the day, too). Leslie is also willing to help with suggestions and advice about behavior problems, making an indoor cat comfortable in an outdoor enclosure, relocating with a cat, coping with allergies, etc.
We're in need of foster homes for adult cats and older kittens (in pairs) who need some additional socializing. Call me if you're interested in fostering (Leslie at 443-244-3359 (cell) or 301-854-6461 (home))
We also need donations to the "Emergency Medical Fund" which is used to treat animals that arrive that need surgery or extensive medical treatment and to the "Spay and Neuter Fund for Feral Cats."
Checks can be made payable to Darby's Place Cat Rescue and mailed to Leslie Gilbert at 16992 Moss Meadow Way, Mount Airy, MD 21771. $50 will spay or neuter a feral cat. I have literally hundreds of cats in the Mount Airy area in need of Trap-Neuter-Return and not enough funds to take care of them all. Please help. Call me if you would like to get involved with helping Mount Airy's community cats.
About us:
Darby's Place is actually our home. We do what we can to aid cats in need that cross our path. Darby's Place got its name because our cat (Darby, of course) epitomizes the best in cat rescue. Darby was hit by a car when she was four months old, an animal lover picked her up and took her to the Montgomery County (MD) Humane Society. MCHS took her to a veterinarian who treated her fractured pelvis. She went into foster care with a woman who specialized in convalescing cats. When the fractured pelvis was almost healed, the foster mother ran an ad in the paper for a home for a kitten that had been hit by a car. Leslie saw the ad and responded. Darby has been healthy and happy here for almost ten years now. She's a gorgeous, affectionate, long-haired brown tabby. We're working towards the day when all cats are cared for and in a forever home, and there's a safety net for all of them.
We can't keep as many cats as we take in. We are full up with resident cats (all rescues of one degree or another). Being listed in Petfinder will help us place the adoptable cats and kittens that come our way. Although we don't accept animals from the public (we have no more room), we may be able to help with advice if you contact us. We have some expertise with socializing cats, feline behavior problems (and their solutions), trap-neuter-return of feral cats, and what you need to know when you adopt a stray cat or caretake a feral cat colony. I also loan equipment (and assistance) and can get you in touch with a low cost spay and neuter clinic if you have a feral cat colony that you would like to trap-neuter-return.
Adopting a friend
Potential adoptive families can schedule an appointment to visit with our cats and kittens available for adoption. There is an adoption fee - $125 for kittens and cats ($200 for two). This includes neutering or spaying, FELV/FIV testing, and at least one set of vaccinations. We offer reduced fee adoptions for older cats and cats with special needs. There is a screening process and an adoption contract. We want to place the right animal in the right home so that everyone is happy and content. We're looking for a forever home for our cats and kittens.
Note - We are willing to work with potential adoptive families and are open to "trial adoptions" - all kittens and cats may be returned if the adoption isn't working. Some of our kittens and cats need a day or a week or a month to feel safe and comfortable in their new home. Their loving nature and sweet selves sometimes can't be seen by potential adopters until the cat has time to feel comfortable with their new family. Some cats are stressed here but would be a wonderful pet in a quieter, less cat intense situation.
We prefer to adopt most of our kittens in pairs. These cats are used to lots of company and are very social with other cats. Most of the time the cats are alone for long periods during the day when kids are at school or the adults are at work. With a companion, they always have a sleeping buddy and friend around. Feeling secure and having a companion makes them better pets.
