Who We Are

Since its founding in 1927 by Elsie Seeger Barton, the Baltimore Humane Society has provided for the care of suffering and homeless animals. Situated on 365 acres of land held in trust for the Humane Society, it operates an animal shelter, a spay/neuter center, a memorial park, and a wildlife sanctuary. The Humane Society is dependent on donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations, and income from fundraising events to support animal care operations.

Adopting a friend

Our adoption process is a snap! Simply follow these steps... First, view our available pets online or visit with them in person at our Adoption Center located in Reisterstown, MD.

Fill out an adoption questionnaire online or in person at the Humane Society. Completed applications can be brought to the shelter or faxed to 410.833.9251. To help expedite the adoption process, please bring the following information:

  • A current driver’s license (you must be at least 21 years to adopt).
  • Landlord contact information or a copy of the pet policy if you rent.
  • Either your vet's contact information or vet records for your current pet and any pets that you have owned in the last 5 years.
  • Applications are taken on first come first serve basis. Our goal is to process applications within a few hours; however, it may take up longer depending on how readily available the information above is obtained. Submitted applications with all of the requested information will be completed by 11:00 a.m. the following day (applications taken on Saturdays and Sundays will be processed by 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday since the shelter is closed on Mondays).

Plan to allow one to two hours to complete the adoption process. It may take longer, depending on the number of animals you wish to get acquainted with, your previous experience with pet care, and the number of other visitors at the facility. Peak days for visitor traffic are Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so please allow extra time if you plan to come on those days.

Thank you for considering adopting a pet from the Baltimore Humane Society. You'll find our prices listed below for the various types of pets we adopt. If you have any question, please feel free to call us. All prices are subject to change without notice.
