Shaw's recently changed their Receipt Rewards program and it is no longer necessary to bring your receipts to the shelter. If you have a Shaw's Rewards Card, please sign up to register for the program. Your purchases made on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with your Shaw's Rewards Card will automatically give a 1% donation to the Medfield Animal Shelter. Once you are logged in, simply enter the Medfield Shelter's Neighborhood Rewards ID#: 49001018170 to select us as your non-profit of choice. Shaw' s is no longer accepting the paper receipts for this program, so there is no need to save them for us. Thank you to everyone who has been participating in the program as it has had a big benefit to the shelter.

Low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic for Cats

As part of our ongoing effort to help reduce the population of homeless and unwanted cats in our area, the Medfield Animal Shelter hosts STOP (Stop the Overpopulation of Pets), a low cost spay / neuter clinic for cats once a month. The fee for female cat spays is $80, and the fee for male cat neuters is $70, and includes a Rabies vaccine if needed. Distemper vaccines, wormer and flea removal products are also available for an additional fee. Payment must be made in full when you bring your cat to the clinic in order for the vet to do the surgery.

All appointments must be booked in advance and cats must be in carriers. Please call the Medfield Animal Shelter at (508) 359-8989 if you wish to book a spay or neuter appointment for your cat(s), or send an e-mail to medfieldcatlover@aol.com with your name and address and the age and sex of the cat you want to book for the clinic. June's Happy Tail!

From Medfield Shelter's Happy Tails

"We adopted Artemesia from the Medfield Animal Shelter a little more than 4 years ago. At that time, she was known as Squiggs. She had the misfortune of having been born outside to an abandoned or feral cat. Animal Control Officer Jenny Shaw rescued Squiggs from a dumpster behind the Papa Gino's in Medfield. Scavenging for food in the dumpster and running for her life were the only experiences with humans she had known prior to coming to the Medfield Shelter. Then she lived at the old shelter for nearly three years. Most adopters didn't notice her because she was so very afraid of people. Through volunteering at the shelter, I was lucky enough to be the person who finally won her trust. Four years later, my pretty little Artemesia is still a bit of a "fraidy cat". But she is a much loved member of our family. She gets along wonderfully well with our other cats and is always up for a game of chase with them. She enjoys life and I know she appreciates the luxuries of being an indoor cat. She loves attention and has her own very special and endearing way of interacting with her humans. We adopted Artemesia because we didn't think anyone else would. We had no idea that adopting her would be such a rewarding and enriching experience, and everyday, we are proud and thankful that she chose to become a member or our family. We are so very thankful that the Medfield Animal Shelter is there to help companion animals in need like our Artemesia. "

You can see more photos of pets adopted from the shelter enjoying their new homes in our Happy Tails photo album or on our Facebook Page.

About the Medfield Animal Shelter

The Medfield Animal Shelter's mission is to rescue lost or abandoned animals and provide for their comfort and safety until they are reunited with their owners or placed in new homes. We are a no-kill shelter, which means no pet will ever be euthanized because it has run out of time to find a home. We are committed to ending the overpopulation of pets that results in an estimated 5 million companion pets being euthanized at shelters in the U.S. every year, therefore all cats, rabbits and dogs adopted from us are spayed and neutered prior to adoption. We also sponsor a low cost spay/neuter clinic for cats at our shelter once a month. The Animal Control Officers from both the towns of Dover and Medfield bring all of their stray pets to the Medfield Animal Shelter, and we take in pets from the surrounding area as space permits. Because our facility is staffed only by a group of dedicated volunteers, we don't have regular adoption hours. All visits to the shelter must be scheduled in advance by calling (508) 359-8989.

How to Get to the Medfield Animal Shelter

We are located off of West Street in Medfield MA, next to the Waste Water Treatment Plant (look for the white mailbox with the puppy and kitten on it and the huge sign that says "Waste Water Treatment Plant").

Unfortunately, our actual address of 101 Old Bridge street, does not appear on any map so if you are using a GPS, Mapquest or Google maps for driving directions, please use 99 West Street , Medfield, MA 02052 as our address. We are not located at 99 West Street. Our driveway is the first one on the right after you pass the signs for 99 West Street if you are traveling on West Street from Route 27. Turn right when you see the sign for the treatment plant, follow the driveway up the hill and over the train tracks, and you will see our building. Please park next to the shelter.

Donations of Supplies

We depend on donations of food, cleaning supplies and cat litter to care for the shelter residents. We also appreciate donations of toys and treats, since they help ease loneliness and boredom for the cats and dogs. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter.

This is a list of items currently on our wish list:

Adoption Requirements

Our goal is to find loving homes for the pets at the shelter so they will be given great care for the rest of their lives. If you are interested in adopting a pet from us, please be prepared to fill out our adoption application, and be sure to bring along the following information when you visit: We don't adopt our cats and kittens to people who want to declaw them. If you want a declawed cat, please consider adopting a cat who has already been subjected to this painful procedure and then given up. There are many declawed cats available for adoption on Petfinder.com.

Pets need veterinary care throughout their lives. Before deciding to adopt a pet, please be sure to you've budgeted not only for food, but also for annual vaccines and check ups, as well heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Please do not adopt a pet if you will not be able to provide it with ongoing care.

Volunteering

The animal shelter is an all volunteer organization, and we are always in need of adult volunteers who can commit to helping on a regular basis (we require all volunteers to make a minimum commitment of helping two times a month at a scheduled time). If you love animals, are at least 16 years old, and have time to help with dog walking, feeding, cleaning, and socializing shy pets, please call (508)359-8989.

Please note: We expect all volunteers to help with some of the cleaning tasks, since keeping the entire facility clean is vital to providing a healthy environment for the pets and their caretakers, and is also very time consuming.

Daily Feeding , Cage Cleaning and Dog Walking

If you are interested in helping out with the feeding and cage cleaning that is done every morning and evening, please call the shelter at (508) 359-8989. We need help both on weekdays and weekends and do ask that you sign up in advance so that we know the pets are always fed.

Dog Walking

We walk the dogs 4 or 5 times daily and need volunteers willing to commit to a dog walking schedule. If you like to walk or run and want a nice companion, we usually have one or two dogs that would love to take you out for some fresh air. We expect our morning and evening dog walkers to also feed the dogs, sweep and mop out kennels and of course, scoop poop.

Maintenance and General Organizing

Here are just a few of the things that need to be done on an ongoing basis. If you can help with any of these tasks, we really need you!

  • cutting the grass
  • care and feeding of the shrubs and other landscaping
  • taking the recycling to the transfer station each week
  • organizing supplies
  • laundry
  • purchasing supplies
  • photographing pets
