News

The adoption fees at the St. John Parish Animal Shelter are $100 for dogs under 6 months of age and $130 for dogs over 6 months of age. Adoption fees for cats are now $80.00 for any age. The fees pay for Spay/Neuter, rabies and basic vaccinations and micro-chipping as well as age appropriate heartworm and feline combo testing. The vaccinations and spay/neuter are required by the state prior to the release of any animal from a shelter. All dogs over the age of 6 months will be heartworm tested. The micro-chipping will make sure the owner is in compliance with state law for identification required on an animal. Tags also bring the animal in compliance, but tags can be lost, removed, or stolen Note that micro-chipping does not remove the state requirement that rabies tags be attached to a collar on the animal. In order to adopt an animal you must submit an adoption questionnaire and meet basic requirements for your current animals. If you come to adopt and your vet cannot be reached we will be unable to approve the adoption at that time. If you rent we must have verification from your landlord that you are allowed to have pets at the residence. Again, if this information cannot be verified you will have to wait until the next business day for your adoption to be approved. Finally: we do not have a vet on staff. Our animals are not vetted until they are adopted so they cannot go home with you until they have been to our local vet clinic for spay/neuter and rabies vaccination. This usually occurs within 5 days of an adoption, please call the shelter with questions concerning any of our policies.

The Shelter is now offering micro-chipping to the public for a charge of $15, which includes registration. The micro-chipping will be available at the shelter between the hours of 1 P.M. and 4 P.M. Tuesday through Saturday, with the exception of holidays.

STATE LAW RS 3:2472 STERILIZATION REQUIRED A Provision providing for the sterilization of all dogs and cats released for adoption or purchased from any public or private animal shelter or animal control agency operated by a humane society, parish, city, or other political division by providing sterilization by a licensed veterinarian before relinquishing custody of the animal.

Who We Are

We are the St John Parish Animal Shelter and our primary job is to take in unwanted stay and companion animals from our parish and give them a safe place to stay until they can be adopted.

Adopting a Friend

When you have found a new friend you must fill out a pre-adopt form. Once our check of the information is satisfactorily completed, (usually in one day's time) you can pay the adoption fee. Saturday adoptions are more difficult because most vet clinics close at noon. If your information cannot be verified the day you come in we will make attempts to follow up the next business day and get back to you as quickly as possible. Once your approved to adopt we set a vet appointment with our local Veterinarian and your new friend can go home once he/she has been given their shots, spayed or neutered, and micro-chipped. Turn around on all of this is usually within 5 days at most from the time you fill out an application to the time you take your new pet home.

Come Visit Us!

Please come and visit us and our furry friends... Our shelter is open from Monday to Saturday from 8:00am-4:30pm for normal business hours. We are closed on Sunday. Come to visit our animals to adopt or to just play with them anytime between 12 pm and 4:30 pm.

We are located off of River Road in LaPlace. Go toward the center of the town on Highway 61. Turn toward the River on Hemlock, by Church's and Popeye's Fried Chicken. Turn right on West 5th Street. Go past St Joan of Arc Church and School and turn Left on Fir Street. Drive down Fir to river Road and turn right on River Road. Exactly 2 tenths of a mile down River Road you will see signs identifying the shelter road. Turn right on Water Plant Road and our shelter is the new building at the front of the property. Pariking lot is directly on your right once you turn onto Water Plant Rd. .

Volunteering

As our dogs live at our shelter , they would love to have you come and spend some time playing with them. Bring them a treat or a new toy, take them for a walk, maybe even give a belly rug or two. Most are very friendly and would love to just get tired from playing with you. Some have not been socialized and some have suffered abuse or neglect. With just a couple hours a week you can help them realize they aren't going to be hurt anymore and it's okay to be a happy, silly, playful dog. If you can't come to the shelter please consider picking a dog to sponsor. A sponsor's job is to network that animal and make it their mission to find him/her a home. This is very easy and can be done from the comfort of your home. Please contact us for details.
