Microchipping Event: Friday, July 18 from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Eastbank Shelter, 1 Humane Way. New Orleans area animal shelters, the Louisiana SPCA and HomeAgain Proactive Pet Recovery Network are sponsoring a FREE microchipping and enrollment clinic. The mircochipping and enrollment for the event at all shelter will be FREE of charge for pet owners. All cats must be in a carrier, and dogs must be on a leash or in a carrier. Puppies and kittens must be at least 12-weeks-old or 10 pounds. HomeAgain is donating all the microchips and enrollments.
Adoptable Pets: Our adoption areas remain extremely full. We have many great animals just waiting for the right adopters to come along. Please come and visit and think about adopting. We often have purebred animals, and we always have marvelous mixes (interesting combinations of the very best). If you inquire about a particular animal, please give its ID number (2 letters, 6 numbers).
We aim to keep the adoption list current and try to update about three times a week. New animals become available for adoption all the time. Our animals are highly adoptable, so it is possible that the dog or cat may be adopted by the time you get to the shelter. If volunteers discover anything new about the pet, we add that to the animal's profie along with more and better pictures. Dogs are usually updated more frequently than cats.
Please consider one of our overlooked or extended stay dogs: Karu is also a very nice overlooked dog. He wants your love. Olivia is living on borrowed time. Her time was up at the shelter, and a volunteer opened her home and heart to offer her a bit more time to be adopted.
Also consider one or two of our overlooked adult cats. Everyone wants kittens, while the adults wait and wait and wait. Snoops has been waiting for a home since before Thanksgiving, and Pollyanna has been waiting since before Christmas. Bubblegum and Chatty don't photograph well, but they are beauties. Come meet them.
Westbank Dogs: In addition to listing adoptable pets from our Eastbank Shelter, we are now listing adoptable dogs from our Westbank Shelter at 1869 Ames Blvd. in Marrero. The dogs on the Westbank are noted as Westbank Dogs in their ID and at the top of their profiles.
Dog Obedience Classes and Puppy Classes: Jefferson Parish Recreation Department offers training classes. Call 736-6999 Ext. 118 for more information or to register. Puppy classes start July 7.
Dog Behavior Workshops: Owners Only (no dogs) attend to learn solutions to dog problems such as jumping, stealing food, housetraining, destroying house and yard.... Aug. 27. Offered through Jefferson Parish Recreation Department. Call 736-6999 Ext. 118 for more information or to register.
Who We Are
We are the Animal Shelter Department for Jefferson Parish. We operate two open-admission animal shelters at #1 Humane Way in East Jefferson near Elmwood (504) 736-6111 and at 1869 Ames Blvd. in Marrero (504) 349-5111.
Volunteering
Interested in volunteering or fostering to help the animals at the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter? If so, go to the Friends of the Jefferson Animal Shelter's website and fill out an online application. We need foster homes for some of our animals who need more care than the shelter can offer - for animals too young to thrive in the shelter and highly adoptable animals who need medical treatment. We have lots of other volunteer opportunities.
Adopting a Friend
The adoption fee includes at least the first set of vaccinations, worming, microchip and the required spay or neuter operation.
