East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control Center

Our Pet List

Who We Are

The East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control Center is devoted to providing residents of our parish with accurate and helpful information about caring for and owning animals.

Mission Statement

To deliver professional animal control services based on sound law enforcement principles and to protect the public health and safety of the citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish through enforcement of both Title 14 of the City Parish Code of Ordinances and the state animal cruelty laws.

About the Animal Control Center

Stray dogs are held for six (6) working days. Stray cats are held for four (4) working days. Although the animals are cared for daily, regardless of weekends and holidays, the Animal Control Center's office is closed on weekends and holidays. We don't count those days against the animals' time.

When the allowed time has expired, the animal becomes public property. It is then evaluated for acceptance into our adoption program based on its health, age, temperament, and available space in our adoption kennels. Animals not accepted for the adoption program are humanely euthanized.

Over 1,200 animals are adopted each year. There is no firm "adopt-by" date for dogs and cats entering our adoption program. Once accepted for adoption, they stay until they get adopted, provided they do not develop any serious physical or mental health problems.

Up to 13,000 animals are impounded yearly.

The Center works with domestics, wildlife, exotics, and livestock.

The staff of 19 includes a Director, Assistant Director, 7 commissioned animal control officers, 4 kennel attendants, 3 clerks, an animal control supervisor, an administrative supervisor, a kennel supervisor, and a part-time contractual veterinarian.

The ACC serves 412,000 citizens throughout East Baton Rouge Parish.

The shelter contains 13,500 sq. ft. and was built in 1980.

The shelter is divided into the following areas: strays, adoptions, isolation, and rabies quarantine.

About 80% of animals entering the shelter are euthanised. Many of those are old, sick, injured, or vicious. About 10% are adoptable, and others are redeemed by their owners.

One way we here at the Animal Control Center are combating this high rate of euthanized animals is the microchip. We have started microchipping all adoptable pets. We urge all pet owners to do the same so that our officers, who carry scanners, can help these lost pets get home quicker.

    Adopting a friend

    Adoption Policy:

    1. All animals are adopted on a first come, first served basis.

    2. Animals may not be held or reserved for anyone.

    3. A legally binding adoption contract is required for all adoptions.

    4. All animals adopted shall be sterilized (spayed or neutered) prior to pick-up by the new adopter. The animal is generally ready for pick-up on the next working day. We practice early spaying or neutering. Puppy and kittens as early as 8 weeks of ages are spayed or neutered.

    5. Our Veterinarian gives all adopted animals a health examination.  They are checked for heartworms and parasites and are given their initial vaccinations and de-worming.

    6. Adopters have twenty-one days from the date of adoption to take their new animal to a private Veterinarian of their choice.  This is mandatory; in order for your animal to receive it’s rabies vaccination and any other series of vaccinations that may be necessary.

    7. We have a fourteen (14) day health guarantee. If your pet becomes ill during these 14 days, you may opt to have it treated by your private veterinarian or you may return it for a refund or a choice of another animal.

    8. Adopters are required to provide proper food, water, shelter and veterinary care to their animals at all times.

    9. Adopters are also required to obey the ordinance and laws pertaining to animals and are not allowed to let their animal run-at-large or create any type of public nuisance.

    10. Adopted animals are required to wear a rabies license tag on a collar or harness at all times.

    Adoption Costs

    Kittens: $70
    Puppies and adult cats: $70
    Adult dogs: $70

The adoption fee is a terrific bargain: included in the fee is your new pet's spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations against common contagious diseases, health screening and its initial preventive medication for heartworms. All this is done by our veterinarian here at the Animal Control Center.

Because it is necessary to establish a relationship with a private veterinarian for your pet's continuing health care, we do not administer your pet's rabies vaccination here at the Center. Instead, you receive a pre-paid certificate redeemable for your pet's rabies shot, tag and license at the veterinarian of your choice. This is included in your adoption fee.

Disclaimer:  The East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control Center has plenty of good animals for adoption.  As animals get adopted, others take their place.  Not all animals entering the shelter are suitable for adoption however.
