Capital
Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is an all-volunteer non-profit humane society
devoted to the prevention of animal suffering.
CAAWS has been serving the people and animals of Baton Rouge since 1979
by placing cats and dogs in loving homes and educating the public about
responsible pet ownership.
CAAWS
is not just a shelter, but also an adoption agency, which places animals in foster homes
until they are adopted. In this way we
try to prepare the animals for the experience of living in a home
environment. We are a no-kill humane
society.
We
also provide a service to the public by allowing people with unwanted dogs
to put their pets up for adoption at our facility. Potential adopters are thoroughly screened and interviewed before being allowed to adopt.
CAAWS is more than an animal adoption agency.
FREE DOG SPAYS - CAAWS is issuing 5 free dog spays to the Baton Rouge Area each month. The first 5 qualifying applicants for the specific month will get the spays. You MUST fill out an application for the spay. Filling out an application does NOT guarantee you a free spay. At this time we are only able to offer this for female dogs. To apply for a free spay you may visit at our shelter on Quinn drive Saturdays between 11am-3pm or an application may be emailed or mailed.
We promote the spaying/neutering of pets by
offering free spays, discount coupons, we run a humane education program for local schools,
and we have a trap/neuter/release program for feral cats. However our most exciting event is the Mystic
Krewe of Mutts Parade. Baton Rouge celebrates
Mardi Gras each spring by dressing up their pets, building floats, and marching
through downtown tossing beads and treats to parade-goers. Favorite Links
