Who We Are

Vernon Parish Animal Shelter is a governmental agency under the Vernon Parish Police Jury. We accept stray dogs and cats, as well as unwanted pets from parish residents. The legal holding period for a stray animal at our facility is 3 -5 working days. After the legal holding period expires, title to the animal reverts to the Animal Shelter. We have an adoption program, but unfortunately, not every animal brought to the shelter will get adopted. Several factors determine which animals are held for adoption. Depending on what we determine the health of the animal to be, what kind of temperament it may have, and how much space we have available at the shelter are all factors in determining which animals are held for adoption. All others are euthanized. Owner surrendered pets have no legal holding period at the shelter. Please consider all options before relinquishing your pet to us.

Adopting a friend

You must be 18 years of age or older to adopt an animal. Adoptions are made on a first-come, first-serve basis. We are unable to hold an animal for you. Our adoption fee is $2.00 for every day the animal has been at our shelter. In accordance with State Law RS 3:2472, a legally binding adoption contract requires the adopter to take their new pet to a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of adoption for a complete Health Check. Rabies vaccination and Spay/Neuter is required. Proof of compliance must be returned to the Animal Shelter.
