Who We Are

Vernon Parish Animal Shelter is a governmental agency under the Vernon Parish Police Jury. We are the agency responsible for enforcing Vernon Parish Ordinance #4, as well as parish and state animal cruelty laws. We accept stray dogs and cats, as well as unwanted pets from parish residents. The legal holding period for a stray animal at our facility is 3 -5 days. If the animal is not reclaimed by its owner, title to the animal reverts to the Animal Shelter. At the time, a determination is made on whether the animal will be humanely euthanized or made available for adoption. Owner surrendered pets have no legal holding period at our shelter. Please consider all options before relinquishing your pet to us.

Adopting a friend

You must be 18 years of age or older to adopt an animal. Adoptions are made on a first-come, first-serve basis. We are unable to hold an animal for you. Our adoption fee is $2.00 for every day the animal has been at our shelter. In accordance with State Law RS 3:2472, a legally binding adoption contract requires the adopter to take their new pet to a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of adoption for a complete Health Check. Rabies vaccination and Spay/Neuter is required. Proof of compliance must be returned to the Animal Shelter.
