Feral cats face a life a suffering: they rarely get enough to eat, fights between tomcats result in nasty wounds which often get infected, and the females give birth often to numerous kittens, most of them suffer of starvation and disease, or die shortly after their birth.
Wild Cat Foundation's mission is to help facilitate in the reduction of the feral cat population through Trap Neuter and Return in Lafayette and surrounding parishes and to educate the populace about feral cats in general. We are a volunteer organization based in Lafayette, Louisiana and we received our non profit 501-C status, February 2005.
Our chosen method is T.N.R.: Trap, Neuter, and Return.

We help colony caregivers humanely trap feral cats which are then transported to feral friendly veterinarians for vetting. After a brief recovery all cats are returned to their colonies. The colonies no longer increase in size and are usually monitored. For more information on TNR of feral cats you can visit Alley Cat Allies a national organization dedicated to the promotion of TNR at Alley Cat Allies. Cat colonies can have numerous members and our goal is to get all the members fixed. We also have them vaccinated for rabies. If a cat needs additional veterinary attention, we do our best to provide it. |
Wild Cat Foundation trapped, neutered and returned 530 cats in the month of November 2006 alone and a total of 998 for the whole 2006 year. Wild Cat Foundation has also been one of the driving forces behind the coming of the Big Fix Rig in Lafayette, LA in March 2007: 982 cats were altered and 100 more were brought to local vets.
However, our funds are limited, especially since we do not receive adoption fees! We depend solely on fundraisers, grants and donations. Please help us by donating, any amount will be greatly appreciated.
Our mission is far from over. We need your help, in donations and/or as a volunteer. Here are some of the ways you can help: Trapping, Fundraising, Letter writing, Organizing Benefits. Or you can tell us what you are good at and we will put you to work.
We are not a shelter, we do not take cats in. The cats we put up for adoption are a result of trapping for T.N.R. Sometimes we trap kittens or we trap cats who are not feral and we determine they would be safer in a home setting. Sometimes also, cats sustain injuries which require extensive vet care. Scout is an example:

Scout was the hardest little cat to trap in a colony of many. He was quite difficult to manage also, and he had some kind of eye injury. Unfortunately, his eye could not be saved and had to be removed, and this is when we had the big surprise: Scout turned out to be the sweetest cat! All this time, he was probably in great pain, but once the pain was gone, the true Scout emerged, a really affectionate little cat! Cats like Scout who need special vet care are not unusual and this adds to our financial burden.
