Who We Are

The Humane Society is an independent, non-profit agency in Muhlenberg County Kentucky licensed to operate an animal shelter. We're currently located in a block building that we moved into in 1985. The Humane Society is not a department of city or county government. The county owns the shelter building. In addition to the Death Row Dogs program there are dogs and cats available for adoption that are housed at our shelter. We're working to list them as well.

MCHS is proud to be in a program in conjunction with Green River Correctional Complex in Central City, Ky. Our program began in 2004 with 8-10 dogs and has experienced great success. There have been 3 deaf dogs trained thus far with one of them going to a deaf adopter as well as one dog going on to be a reading therapy dog. Other adopted dogs have gone on to be therapy dogs in other areas as well. This program has grown to 20 dogs per class. Class 20 of the death row dogs went into the Green River Correctional Complex March 12, 2008 for their 8-10 week stay. Pictures of this new group are up and accessible by clicking on our adoptable pets at the top of this page. These dogs are entered into this program to save their lives, learn to be good dog citizens, find a home of their own, and share the love and energy they have with their new owners for their lifetimes.

This program consists of 40 dedicated inmate trainers and 20 dogs. They remain at GRCC for approximately 8-10 weeks. Each dog lives in a cell with it's 2 trainers. They are taught basic obedience ( sit, down, stay ). They are crate trained, taught to walk on a loose leash, and learn to ring a bell to alert you that they need to go out.Not every dog may take to the bell, however they will have a way to let you know it's time to go outside. These are inside dogs that you would be happy to have as an addition to your family. They are heartworm negative and they receive their heart worm preventative each month. They are up to date on all shots and have been spayed or neutered. They are typically between the ages of 1-3 years.

Please don't miss the opportunity to experience one of these well trained dogs. In addition to their training they will have been tested to be AKC certified Canine Good Citizen dogs. This Certification was first done with Class 17 and being certified can possibly reduce your homeowners insurance in some cases.

Death Row Dog Graduates are as follows: $150.00 for a mixed breed. This covers spay/neuter, DHLPP vaccine, rabies vaccine, heartworm test and heartworm preventative There is an additional charge of $50.00 for any purebred dog in the program bringing the total for a purebred dog to $200.

Due to great amount of interest generated in this program it is STRONGLY recommended that you apply ASAP in order to be considered for adopting one of the graduates from the program. It is also recommended that you list a first and second choice for adoption to increase your chances of adopting one of the dogs. Please list the dog by name and identification number on your application. If you are not selected, please remember that each DRD graduate receives multiple applications and for this reason, we are unable to contact you unless you are selected as the adoptive home. We regret that we cannot allow any potential adopters to visit the prison where the dogs are being trained due to security issues.

Please feel free to contact the shelter should you need any further information on any dog listed. We do adopt to out of state/overseas homes but cannot help with transportation. Adopters MUST come in person or select a representative to pick up your new family member at graduation. Only one other person may attend graduation with you and this may not be a child. DRD adoption fees are listed at the bottom of this page. Applications for this program can be downloaded from this page as well. Please mail your application to: MCHS P.O. Box 164 Greenville, KY 42345. Be sure and write the dog's name and ID # at the top of your application before submitting. Donations are needed to help fund this program, also you, as well as those who have adopted through the program have the opportunity to be a DRD Good Will Ambassador by telling all your friends and neighbors about the DRD program.. Please call MCHS to make a tax deductible donation to the program. Volunteers are also needed for the program ( groomers, vets).

The Humane Society receives limited funds to operate the shelter. As you can imagine, help from you, the public, is needed. No donation is too small. Our strong desire to do more can only be accomplished with the help of donations.

DONATIONS from concerned citizens like you pay for medical care of sick and injured animals, upkeep of animal cages, incidental supplies such as food/water bowls, collars, leashes and as you can imagine, the list goes on.

The Humane Society's mission is to provide a clean comfortable shelter for homeless, abused, lost and impounded animals in our community; to place as many of these animals as possible in loving and responsible homes, to investigate complaints of animal abuse/neglect; and to educate the public about responsible care of companion animals. Educating the public about the importance of spay/neuter is our NUMBER ONE GOAL!!!

Adopting a friend

We welcome out of state adopters. However, we do not arrange transport for adopted animals. Transport services are available through other agencies.
