The Way Home Rescue Alliance

The common goal of TWHRA is to save animals from high intake, high kill shelters in rural KY that would otherwise be euthanized due to overcrowding . Many of these death row animals are placed in loving foster homes until they are adopted through TWHRA and go to their new forever home. In addition, we also network with regional, northeastern, and even Canadian rescue groups in order to save more animals from the shelter than what we could accommodate through our own adoption program. We also support legislation that improves on Kentucky's animal welfare laws, in addition to being strong advocates of spaying and neutering dogs and cats.
TWHRA is always in need of volunteers. There are multiple ways in which one can volunteer; the two primary ways being as a transporter or as a foster. Due to the high intake at the shelters in rural KY, TWHRA frequently makes arrangements with approved out-of-state rescues to get shelter animals to safety. When this happens, "transports" are set up, in which animals are picked up by one of our volunteers from the shelter, and then driven to meet the receiving out-of-state rescue that stepped up to save them. This is a very rewarding experience as you get to be the first one to help the rescued animal start its journey!
Fostering is another rewarding experience as you get to become part of a rescued dog or cat's journey to finding their forever home. As a foster parent, you will provide a home setting for a shelter animal where they can experience love, warmth and comfort while being socialized, as well as trained in basic obedience, until they are adopted. We are always looking for responsible foster homes to help us start these wonderful animals on their path to a forever home. Our need for loving foster homes is ongoing. Fostering can last from just a few days to several months. The more foster homes we have the more dogs and cats we can save.
If you'd like to learn more about volunteering to help with transports or with fostering , please send an email to lisa_schorr@windstream.net or sarahthewayhome@gmail.com .Each TWHRA pet has been thrown away at least once. Pets are not disposable just because your life has changed. Before you decide to bring a pet into your home, make absolutely sure that it will be a lifetime commitment. When our pets leave us we want them to go to their forever homes. By adopting a pet you are not only helping the pet you adopt, but also others needing to come into our Rescue. To adopt one of the furry friends on our website, an application must be completed and approved, and a home visit performed. Once approved, there is an adoption contract to be signed plus an adoption donation paid. These donations cover the cost of vetting the animals in our care.
If you don't have the time to devote to volunteering, but would like to help in some way, donations and/or sponsorship offers are a great way to do so. Donations are used to address any immediate/unforeseen major medical needs an animal coming out of the shelter may have. If you would like to make a secure donation, you may do so via the "Donate" button through Paypal on this web page. Sponsorship offers are also a wonderful way to help. When someone offers sponsorship, the amount of the sponsorship can be attached to an animal at the shelter that is in urgent need of rescue. Many times, when an animal is posted out to rescues with a sponsorship attached, it is an additional incentive for a rescue to step up. The sponsorship could be used by the receiving rescue towards the animals vetting or for boarding until transport can be arranged if the animal is going out-of-state. If you are interested in sponsoring a shelter animal in need of rescue, please email sarahthewayhome@gmail.com .
TWHRA strongly advocates spaying and neutering. All of our animals and spayed/neutered prior to adoption. If you are interested in getting your own pet spayed or neutered, the following clinics in the Central KY area can provide these services. Please note that this is for information purposes only. We do not prefer one clinic over another.
